Variables in SQL statements?

I'm kind of a novice at using SQL and is wondering if it is possible to use variables in SQL-statements on an AS/400, and if so, how do I do that? I was thinking of using a CL-program to execute the SQL statements for me. Many Thanks! Jorgen
