View Full Version : VPN to Network and then secure FTP to Shared Folders

Yes you can set up FTP to folders but secure can mean a number of things. The FTP process to get into the folders is called NAMEFMT 1. You can probably search on the word NAMEFMT here in the forum and find how to use that name format to get to the folders on the AS/400. When your network person talks about security, is he/she referring to SSL? In order to sign onto an AS/400 you must have a user and password with access to the folders you attempt to FTP to. A VPN is basically a tunnel created for your network that is running over the internet. VPNs are secured I believe by encrypting but don't hold me to that. If your FTP traffic is moving across the VPN you should be okay. If your FTP traffic is going straight through your firewall and across the internet (no VPN) then you may be vulnerable to a hacker hitting your AS/400 FTP port directly from the internet. I think you can restrict the ports on your firewall to only accept traffic from specific locations though. Anyway, I hope this makes some sense to you. My initial thought from your question is that the network person has no idea what an AS/400 is and is assuming that anonymous FTP is active on the system. Anonymous FTP is only active if you place an exit point program to allow anonymous FTP (which I doubt you have). HTH Scott

My network person understands that an iSeries profile and password will have to be used. Everytime he tries to FTP he gets to QGPL. The folder is actually under QDLS. If I'm understanding correctly (and it has been a while since I used the Namefmt) by using it I basically switch from Libraries to folders. The bat file at that point should be able to us 'cd' to position to the proper folder.

Glen, Yes. Use Namefmt 1 to get to the folders. Scott

We are in the process of cracking down access to both our network and iSeries. We have or are in the process of implementing a new secure VPN (I'm not a network person so I don't know exactly how or what they are doing to accomplish this). The network admin has given me this question: Can we set up a secure FTP to the shared folder (\sysnameqdlsfoldername)? if so, how? so my question is can we ftp directly to a folder on the iSeries using full iSeries security? If so, what is needed to make this happen? Our system is currently on V4R5 but will be V5R1 on Monday. I appreciate any and all assistance with this matter.
