Dave - Our development team is looking at ways that customers can decrease the ingestion time (the time it takes to build/update the text index using the SYSTS_UPDATE stored procedure). Are you working with actual rich text documents (word, pdf, ppt, etc)? If not, do not use the INSO option on the index create as this will increase the ingestion time.
