Chris, We experienced the same problem and found a solution that I like even better. 1. Create a Printer profile on the PC that prints to FILE:. The device tied to this profile should be a Generic/Text Only printer. 2. Send the report to this outq. 3. The system will prompt you for the file name to create, you will then have a text file on your PC ready to be processed. This software does not work in Win95 and I was wondering if there is a solution for this. Thanks, Chris H,

It is called SPLTOOL (Spooled File Tool) and can be downloaded at href="http://prairie.lakes.com/~bvstone/as400sw.html."> href="http://prairie.lakes.com/~bvstone/as400sw.html.">http://prairie.lakes.com /~bvstone/as400sw.html. Downloading the spooled file to the PC is just one of the options that this can do for you. HREF="http://prairie.lakes.com/~bvstone/"> SRC="http://prairie.lakes.com/~bvstone/images/sig.gif">

Chris, This utility was written by my associate Chris Peters. You can check his web site Here for information about new versions. Hi Chris, We are using a software call REVIVE since 3 years now to download to EXCEL. What I like with that software, it's that my excel file are not completely erased when I download to excel. (only the number of line the report contain.) That way, even if my file contain chart, i do not have to re-create them each time and i do not have to create complex macro in excel. If you want to know more about that software, this is the site : target=_new href="http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Madec/"> target=_new href="http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Madec/">http://ourworld.compuser ve.com/homepages/Madec/ Gilbert.

Richard, If you read the verbage on the main forum page, you will find this: "No unpaid advertising is allowed in the Discussion Forums. Information on how to advertise with Midrange Computing can be found by clicking here. " Chris

Well IMHO, I saw the exact same message posted not once, not twice but nine times in a row when viewing all messages by date. That's spam and it's distasteful. One post would have been enough. Chris

We can't have a forum to help each other without sometimes referring to and recommend products that must be paid for. Are we indirectly advertising these products? Yes. Is this an unpaid advertisment, in the context of the MRC policy? No. It takes on a completely different look/feel when it is a vendor who is recommending their own product vs one of us recommending a solution from a particular vendor. If one of us had responded to 6 postings and referred to the same vendor for the solution to each, would that be the same thing...? IMO "Everything in moderation." See ya in the hallway.

I agree (somewhat begrudgingly) that the multiple posts were needed if the user that posted the original question is looking for his response in the category to which he posted it. However, I do not think placing an advert in the signature is any different than giving someone your business card. And, BTW, In the ten months that I have been monitoring this forum, I do not think I have EVER read a response by Joe Pluta where he is hawking his product for profit. My 2¢. Joe

About the only thing I really saw was that he never answered the original questions! When someone asks how to do something on the AS/400, they usually want to know how it is done. It would of been much better if he had explained how it was done, then said that he had a product that actually did it already. I mean, heck, there are commercial programs out there to do just about everything we are trying to do here. But we are here to learn HOW to do something, not how to spend money. In my case anyway. David, I point people to my free site, www.java400.net. I do NOT point people to my commercial site. I give away free software, free tutorials, free packages, free installation instructions, and so on. There is indeed a small plug on java400.net for my commercial site. It's rather small and unobtrusive, at the bottom, in a tiny font. To date, over 1500 people have visited my installation instructions. Several hundred people have downloaded my PBD packages. I have made exactly zero dollars. I think it's a service to point people there, not an advertisement. (Do you have any idea how much effort and personal expense it is to keep a site up and write free software and test it and put it out on the web? www.zappie.net is a non-profit site, believe me <smile>) I don't sell any of my Java software (although I may have a commercial version of CPYSPLFPDF soon.) My only "product" is my services. I will indeed go to client sites and train people on using Java, Java/400, Visual Age, and my packages. But I don't hawk that here (well, with the exception of this particular message <grin>). www.java400.net (//www.java400.net?phpMyAdmin=MzvdqLOMiN7HL4yz2OU82BJ vkG9), where the AS/400 speaks Java with an RPG accent Home of href="//www.zappie.net/java/techniques/pbd.htm">PBD1.2P, the color=red>FREE Java/400 Client/Server Toolkit

Hello Chris, I have read the interesting debate that my replies to postings looking for products have raised. I do not place blatant postings in these forums, but simply reply to those seeking product advise. If you read any of the information on SPAM, SPAM is unsolicited and in each case my replies were solicited by someone asking for advise. Now of course if I were to place a response selling panty hose or access to an x-rated web site that might be considered SPAM :-) We receive a lot of thanks from customers who find us by utilizing free services such as the Midrange Computing forums. FYI: We are a paying MRC Advertiser, so we do already pay for classified ads. Even so, I will continue to respond to people seeking product advise just as the other vendors in this same thread have done. Regards, Richard Schoen RJS Software Systems

I do not place blatant postings in these forums, but simply reply to those seeking product advise. If you read any of the information on SPAM, SPAM is unsolicited and in each case my replies were solicited by someone asking for advise. I think part of the problem was that you slammed nine advertorials onto the forum in one day. That's a bit of overkill. And actually, Richard, you DO put unsolicited advertising in some cases. For example: Someone wrote:
Moving Spool file to PC without using any software. Is there anyway to do this by ftp? How can you move a spool file into the IFS or shared folder?
and you responded:
If you decide to automate the downloading of spool files to different formats and are willing to use vendor software to do so, check out our WinSpool/400 report download products. For more information, please contact me via Email or visit our web site.
That's the type of response that irks people - well it irks me, anyway. The poster was asking for a specific answer to a specific question (the poster stated EXPLICITLY that he did NOT want a package solution) and you replied with a barely applicable plug for your software. This in the midst of the other eight posts that day. Combine this with the fact that you were responding to posts from several months ago, and it appears that you are simply skimming the forum to find customers, rather than engaging in the interchange of free advice and support that is the real core of this exchange. FYI: We are a paying MRC Advertiser, so we do already pay for classified ads. Even so, I will continue to respond to people seeking product advise just as the other vendors in this same thread have done. I read that as: "I don't really care what your opinion is, I will hawk my product regardless." Pardon me, but that seems a tad arrogant and off-putting even to me, and my ego is roughly the size of Montana. And just for the record, I have NEVER seen a regular contributor to this forum put in nine product plugs in one day - WITH NO OTHER INPUT TO THE FORUM WHATSOEVER. I think the last part of that sentence is what bothers me the most. Oh well, take it as you will. Bring back the old MRC BBS and newsreaders :-) Now that they've seen the light and converted to Lotus Notes, the forums will be a much nicer place to visit and I will probably start contributing technical responses again. I understand the comments on relevence and will make every effort to establish due-relevence, however that is always subjective as is anything. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I read that as: "I don't really care what your opinion is, I will hawk my product regardless." BTW: If your ego is as big as Montana, then my comments certainly ahould not offend you. I've been to Montana many times and there are lots of wide open spaces. Not that I think my griping is likely to have any effect one way or the other... I'm just letting you know <grin>. I understand the comments on relevence and will make every effort to establish due-relevence, however that is always subjective as is anything. I don't think you really believe that, Richard. It's pretty easy to tell if something is relevant or not. Most of the time your posts are relevant (I think 7 of the 9 were pretty on target). I think you just got a little carried away in your zeal to improve the lives of the forum readers <smile>. Anyway, I'm glad you're willing to get online and offer answers and help as well as advertisement.
