I have a client with no in-house programmers (or even an operator) for the AS/400. However, they frequently have a requirement to get their AS/400 spool files into Excel, so they can massage the data. Because they don't have programmers on staff, they are interested in a tool that can do this function for them. I know there are tools around, but haven't used any of them. Any comments or suggestions any of you have are welcome, and I'll pass them along. Thanks, Debbie Gallagher

I use a product by Evergreen Interactive that works great. There are more elaborate tools on the market, but this one is reasonably priced. They have an evaluation copy on their web site. HREF="http://www.evergreeninteractive.com"> Here is a link. The May/June issue of AS/400 Network Expert (ANE) just published a tech tip on several ways to do this manually by using Client Access for Windows 95/NT V3R1M3 and above or the new Express client. If you don't get ANE, you can contact Midrange Computing for a sample issue. There is an option to strip out the headings as well, so they won't have to worry about that if the headings are standard across pages. Just save the spooled file to a .txt file with the headings stripped out, open the text file in excel, and let it autoformat making the columns. I have done this many times with great results. Getting the spooled file to the PC can be done in one of many ways too. You can use shared folders, the IFS, or even FTP (if you have an FTP server running on your PC.) SPLTOOL does a lot more, too. Check it out at: href="http://prairie.lakes.com/~bvstone/as400sw.html"> href="http://prairie.lakes.com/~bvstone/as400sw.html">http://prairie.lakes.com/ ~bvstone/as400sw.html Click on download and then follow the SPLTOOL link. SRC="http://prairie.lakes.com/~bvstone/images/sig.gif">
