  • Default Disk Protection on AS/400

If we are not implementing any type of Disk protection and if one disk unit out of an ASP is lost..can we rebuild the data or not..because its mentioned in many manuals that the data on ASP is written basing on EX-OR Alogorithm....implies RAID V.If so ,we should be able to recover the disk unit even without implementing the disk protection. Can any one justify my answer...? Thanks in advance

    Default Disk Protection on AS/400

The disks must have been added to a RAID set in order for them to be protected. It is possible but unwise to have an unprotected iSeries. Do WRKDSKSTS and press F11. It should show a --Protection-- column. Under it are Type and Status columns. On our RAID 5 system, Type = DPY and Status = ACTIVE. Type can also be MRR for Mirrored protection, RAID 1. You are unprotected if the Type is not DPY or MRR, or the Status is anything but ACTIVE.
