    Sorry, but I cannot agree with Point 1, "Number One: Don't send your data off-site; keep it all in-house." The gold standard for reliable, enterprise level backup systems includes off-site storage for at least some of the backup data. This wasn't arrived at through some arbitrary decision making process. In the real world, off-site data is more likely to be available for restoration. It protects you against many more plausible hazards, including fire, water, gas leaks and site contamination. If the organization is big enough to have multiple sites, then that will do nicely. However even if the data is transported over a network link, then that link is vulnerable to snooping and probably needs to be encrypted. That's my larger point. Off-site storage is necessary. Transporting data securely by practically any means requires encryption. Problem, solution. Don't be lulled into thinking, 'we don't transport data, we don't need encryption, and we are safe against all plausible threats.'
