SetLL not working over multiformat logical?

I'm having no trouble reading a logical built over several instances of the same file in different libraries...can chain okay also. When I do SetLL on either the file or any of the format names, it acts like it never happened! I get same results on the subsequent read as if I had not done a SetLL. This is a major performance hit. Any ideas?
