Yes, we are just beginning to use VisualAge for RPG. We are currently trying to train ourselves.

Hi there Mark: Do you have access to IBM's redbook, "Who Knew You Could Do That with RPG IV, a Sorcerer's Guide to RPG IV"? It has a chapter on designing client/server apps with VARPG.

Mike we are using VARPG as well. We currenly have a thick-client model application deployed and running. Do you have specific questions for getting started, or just looking for future resources? I'll help wherever I can, and can direct you to other places for info if you need. Kevin Silbernagel Linn-Benton-Lincoln Education Service District Albany, Oregon USA

Hi Kevin: I was just wondering if anyone is adopting this tool. I took the class 2 years ago and am now using it again at a second site. ....but, I haven't found too many other sites that are using it.

Mike, I have only talked to a few people that use it as well, and that is always of concern to me. My biggest fear is that IBM will abandon it because of a small user base. Whenever I talk with IBM about it they assure me that it is a key part of the strategy. We hope it has a long life and I've done what I could to promote it. I've run an introduction/startup session at our local user group's "education day" event, and last fall at COMMON I added my own enthusiasm on the Expo floor when George Farr was talking to a group of interested folks. I figure that since I like it, I should do what I can to keep it going. Good luck on your projects, Kevin

Brian, Your response implies that you know something that the rest of us don't. Is there any part of it that you can share? Kevin

Unfortunately, we can't publish anything until the announcement is made...

Ok Brian, now that the big day is here, can you share any details about changes to VARPG? I read your article, but I'm looking for more specifics, if you have them. Thanks, Kevin

I don't have a list of product-specific changes to VARPG handy. The biggest change that I'm aware of is that now everyone can get it easier. They also added support for the V5R1 enhancements to the languages like optional free-form C specs and enhanced Java interaction. Perhaps others can better answer this question... Brian
