A new thread. (The other one was too hard to follow.) ---------------------------------------------- Ralph wrote: It's not that we don't have options with VisualAge for RPG, ASNA Visual RPG Caviar, Delphi/400, Java Swing, Host On Demand, and Jacada Innovator, all with sockets level visual interfacing, but it's a fatal flaw that there isn't a standard, recognizable AS/400 interface. As long as there isn't there won't be any new AS/400 sales, just fewer and fewer upgrades. We are left with an application development direction that is a mess, simply because IBM has thrown us out to sea to sink or swim with Websphere. Roll your own web pages. Roll your own Java programs, maybe AWT, maybe Swing. Write VisualAge for RPG apps. Run Linux in a soon to come LPAR and serve X windows desktops. Or just keep developing green screens like we're doing until somebody pulls the plug and installs a system from a company with a coherent vision. Oh what fun. ----------------------------------------------- This is a key point. IBM must take the lead and deliver a GUI browser hybrid. Then everyone would have a CUA (remember that??) to emulate when developing new apps. During a Web Cast I asked the IBM panel why they push host on demand but don?t use it for OS400. They were stunned. I asked what they were going to do to shake the green screen legacy tag. For lack of an answer they quickly said someone would contact me to discuss AND they would provide me with an email address to forward additional questions. I'm still wating like a pimply faced freshman for the prom queen. Defending green screen development is like Microsoft saying VB for DOS is the future of app dvt on Windows. Hanging onto the Green screen is the best way to lose it all. The 400 and the apps it runs. I just believe as does Ralph, fix a few things and we?ll all be surprised how well this platform can compete.
