Default Model 150 vs. Model 170

Hey everyone! I'd love to get everyone's opinion on something. I'm looking to purchase a low-end (but supported) AS/400. My basic options seem to be either a high-end Model 150 or a low-end Model 170 (I think it's a 2290). Questions: 1. Other than the fact that the 150 isn't on software subscription, can anyone come up with good reasons NOT to go with the "orphan architecture" of the 150? 2. If they were both priced equally, which would be the better deal (remember, this is specifically the highest-end 150 vs. the lowest price Model 170)? 3. Does anyone know if the 150 will support V4R4, or does anybody have an idea at what release IBM will stop supporting the 150? Any input would be greatly appreciated, folks... Default Model 150 vs. Model 170

    1. I have 6 of the little beast on the floor. They have proved to be good equipment, 6 to 8 developers in heavy compile environment. It is an orphan and the software subscription is a good example. They have been left out off many other IBM giveme programs and upgrades as well. Free upgrade to CA 3.1.3 etc. 2. If upgrade is a consideration 170 wins hands down. IBM has stated that the 150 will never go beyond 5 drives. It has no upgrade path. Low end 170 is 2289 as of the latest annoucements. The 2289 has some restrictions on upgrade. Makes 2290 good value. On the other hand, in one of IBM's recent Lunch and Learn internet sessions it was stated that where the 150 and 170 overlap the 150 was still a better buy, mostly because of the lower software cost I think. 3. 150 was still in the latest announcement. It is IBM's box for the very low end market and I have not sean any intent to discontinue. Question - why is the 150 an orphan? It would seam that IBM does not want to make it too good of a thing?
