Default ethernet PC - hub - ethernet as/400 via client access express

Dear All, I am having problems with the above setup. I am getting CWBC01003 return code 10060. My pc can ping itself with 200.5.84.158 My as/400 can ping itself with 199.5.83.158 When i try pinging from as/400 to my pc i get 'Cannot reach remote system'. When i try pinging from pc to as/400 it times out. Do I need to specify the LAN adapter address of my as/400 on my PC as was required under client access for example? What port number do I need to enter on the 5250 session , is 23 okay? For example central server port is 8470 on the as/400 etc. Can anyone help please I have been stuck for along time now and it is not a constructive use of my time, my wife won't put up with much more! kind regards, Halvor

Halvor, If your previous Client Access required the LAN Adaptor address, it follows that you were using NS Router type of connection. Unfortunately for you, Client Access Express supports only TCP/IP. If your AS/400's IP address starts with 200 and your PC's IP address starts with 199, they cannot see each other. To connect both machines, you have to: 1. Make sure TCP/IP has been started in your AS/400 2. Register the AS/400's IP address in your PC's host file (c:windowshosts) 3. Change your PC's IP address to something starting with 200. You should get hold of your network administrator for assistance.

Halvor, I believe in this instance your mask should be 255.255.0.0 . Bill

Thanks Bill you were right ! I can now download data from the AS/400 to my pc. but I cant get my 5250 session going. I am getting the 657 code at the bottom of a blank screen. Can't find my hosts file ? What should it be called and where should it go? It shouldn't be a problem because I have one already. I also get 11001 error sometimes. What is the SERVICES file for ? What is the LMMHOSTS file for ? I'm so close to getting this working now its very frustrating , can anyone help me please. regards Halvor

You must use the host table file c:windowsHOSTS (WIN98), C:winntsystem32driversetchosts (in WINNT). LMHOSTS not for CA/400. Another point is "configure" the session from the menu option and select option "communication" at the session screen.

Halvor, If you are still in OS Version 4.3 or lower, you have to run STRHOSTSVR *ALL to get TCP/IP working properly. PS. Don't mind the IPX error message if you are not using IPX.

Halvor, When you receive the 657 code it means the AS/400 has been contacted, has verified your profile, and is in the midst of acquiring resources to give you a bound session. One of the resources is of course the virtual device (QPADEVnnnn). How long does it sit with the 657? Eventually it should time out and give you a 658 code. If it does, click on Communications, click disconnect, then connect. You should acquire the session almost immediately. If it's just hanging at the 657 then you have to wait until you get to work to check the 400 System Value QAUTOVRT. Make sure it's greater than zero. If it has a count then look at the devices, WRKCFGSTS *DEV QPAD* for status. They should be Vary on Pending. It's possible for them to be Varied Off because of an IPL, or they were disabled. If from an IPL, they should vary on at contact (V4R3 started this I think). If they were disabled, they have to be manually varied on. I have to admit I'm not sure how you are connecting. Mentioning Ethernet in the topic, and your wife in the problem description, sort of distorts this. I don't know if you are dialing into an Ethernet network, or if you have an AS/400 in your house with an Ethernet hub running to your PC. Anyway, I hope this makes some sense and helps in some way. Regards. Jack
