    Mark,
I have V4.5 on NT 4 SP5 and didn't have any problems. I had major problems loading the service pack, but they were mostly my fault.

Has anyone had any problems installing WDT400 or any of its components. I can't get it to install either from the CD or the IFS. I'm using WINNT 4.0 w/SP6a.

I've had nothing but problems. I've tried installing from CD and the IFS. First the thing wouldn't install VAJAVA. Then the help didn't configure properly. Now after wiping it off of the system over 100 times (no exageration), it won't install CODE Editor or Designer although it said that it did. This is extremely frustrating. We're putting Domino up next week. I hope this is not an indication of things to come.

I feel for ya. You might want to try the CODE400-L mail list at Midrange.com. There are some IBM'ers participating there and they have been extremely helpful. IBM does have a set of newsgroups for these products as well, but strangely their participation is not as comprehensive.
My only contribution to your trials would be to suggest that you take all defaults as it suggests them to you, it seems as if the group that wrote these packages aren't familiar with all of the different ways that people set up their PC's, so they make some bad assumptions about how the software will be setup and used.

Yes - I had problems - just last week. I managed to get around it though, by doing the following. Firstly, HELP for the Websphere Development Tools is another IBM great idea - you run your own HTTP server on your own PC so they can display HTML pages rather than use Windows help that works everywhere. However, if your path statement (remember the old DOS Path? That path statement) is over 200 bytes then your install will fail. So clean up your AUTOEXEC.BAT to reduce your Path to 200 bytes. You will need to reboot so that the active path statement when you install is les than 200 bytes. Now, if you have tried to install before, then you need to clean off everything that even remotely resembles an installed component. Use the un-install function which means run Setup from the CD and then select Remove. Then, using Windows Explorer delete any directory named IBMDEBUG or IMNNQ_* or WDT400. If the directory exists, the install program assumes that the product is installed. Do a search for any files named *.MSI. There shouldn't be any left, but if there are you may need to scrap those directories as well. I haven't installed VARPG etc this time so I am not sure what other directories there could be to clean off, but clean off everything that the previous install stuck on there. Now, run Regedit, and search for WDT400. Delete any references found. Now search for IMNNQ and delete any references found. Search for WEBSPHERE and delete any references found. Again, the install program makes assumptions if it finds anything in the registry. Now, run the program REGCLEAN.EXE. This is a registry checker/cleaner that you download from the microsoft site for free. It cleans up the registry a certain amount, and I have found that it works very well although it is very conservative in what it cleans out. Now reboot, and you are ready to start installing. I only installed CODE/400 and it worked quite well. If you have any further problems, try the website for WDT400 - there are a number of documents there to assist, or call IBM. hope this helps, Russell

My install hung, or crashed at Installing Debugger and Netquestion. Without giving any big errors. When the system was restarted, there was No Help for anything related to Websphere. IBM says they are huddling on the matter and will get back to me

WDS on Windows 98/ME is almost unuseable. VAJ almost doesn't work at all, and forget about Debugger. WebFacing works, but it's got some serious issues with Win 98/ME. Do yourself a favor and go to Windows 2000. IBM will be dropping support for Win 98/ME (and possibly NT 4.0) by year-end 2002 or early 2003 anyway, if Microsoft follows through on its stated plans to drop support for those Windows versions, so migrate while you have leisure, not when you absolutely have to. W2K is 10,000 times more stable and easier to use than Win 98/ME anyway. It's worth migrating to, just for that reason alone.

Would you by chance happen to know how Windows 2000 compares to NT 4.0? Nope. Since W2K is built on the NT Kernel (colonel...) I assume it's comparable. Maybe one of the Forums' windows weenies (:-) will know.

Hey guys, From the client standpoint, Win 2000 Pro is generally much better than NT WS. A worthy upgrade, IMHO. It supports more stuff, runs faster, is more stable, and has a better interface than NT 4.0 WS. I haven't tried XP yet, because I don't like the registration things and Win2K runs just fine. Anyone else? Brian
