    Default Remote users

My company is going to be doing business with a company in Puerto Rico. They need access to our AS/400 to run our applications. There will be approx 15 remote users. They will be primarily running RPG apps in emulation sessions from CA/Win95. On my end i currently have an As400 620/2175 and a token ring with approx 50 users. My question is what gear do i need to connect their office to our As400? I am leaning towards Synch modems at both ends and a remote controller at their end. Will this be fast enough? Also, what type of phone line connection do i need between us? Any help would be greatly appreciated as my knowledge of remote communications is weak. Thanks,Steve

Remote controller and SDLC (SYNC) modems will work, and provide a layer of security (APPC/APPN). The point-to-point connection can carry multiple conversations (sessions) at the same time, no problem. The phone companies in the U.S., and I believe PR, provide "treated" business lines. This means the phone company monitors and cleans the lines continuously. Your only problem is band width for performance/response. I think you can get this kind of line up to 64Kbps before you have to jump to a dedicated line. The band width is related to modem speed, and ASYNC is faster than SDLC, but you would need 15 phone lines. Divide whatever band width you go with by 15 user sessions. This is what you have to work with. The smaller the band width, the slower response times (contention). Hope this helps. Regards. Jack McGuigan - MIS Manager - American Life Ins. Co.
