Sounds like the beginning of the end... I wonder if and how they will parse up Microsoft. Any ideas? .... just trying to make it to the finish line ....

    > Credit card companies hate people that pay their bill every month. This reminds me of something I read in some book a few years back. It said that Sears is not a department store, but a finance company masquerading as a department store.

I don't know what it means, but I'm bothered that an organization that's a trillion dollars in debt, that can't live within a budget, that forces me to pay into a Ponzi scheme called Social Security, that pays people to be idle, that cares more that the military be politically correct than that it be capable of defending our borders, etc. etc. is prosecuting a successful business. I'm not enamoured of Microsoft, but (a) they haven't used any tactics tons of other businesses aren't also using and (b) they have managed to greatly benefit the consumer with affordable software. Whatever happens, I doubt the consumer is going to benefit.

Is it time to sell Microsoft stock?

It's no use hiding your feelings Ted, just come out and say what you really feel. :-) David Abramowitz

Just what we need more government regulations. It didn't work with AT&T, it won't work here. .... just trying to make it to the finish line ....

Ted - Is there any gov't agency yet that will pay me for not generating program code? It could be at the federal, state or local level. My fingers are getting stiff and my mind is starting to wander, but I haven't reached retirement age. Please help! Just an old mainframer caught in the Web!

While I'm going to attempt to sidestep the political arena here, I have to say one thing about Microsoft. I'm not worried about Microsoft's ability to make money, nor am I too terribly upset about their trash-and-burn tactics (although the way they stiffed OS/2 still causes a resentment or two). However, their stance with Java is absolutely, positively unacceptable to me. Internal documents clearly show that Microsoft's sole purpose in creating their non-compliant JVM is to derail the concept of write-once run-anywhere. They specifically wanted to lock the world into their corporate stranglehold, while at the same time taking away an important benefit to SOCIETY. It's one thing to stomp a competitor's product; it's another to stifle the growth of a technology simply for greed and profit. And while it may have happened in the past and may happen again in the future, that's NO REASON for it to be acceptable in the present. Especially when we're talking trying to monopolize a technology that has the potential to benefit millions of people. I'm a huge Java advocate now, especially with the accessibility options which could help me realize my personal dream of using computers to help the physically and developmentally handicapped with all sorts of alternate input devices, and I'll be damned if I want to see those benefits bestowed solely at the whim of Microsoft. No, His High and Mightiness has overstepped all bounds of decency in my mind, and simply reinforced the old adage that "power corrupts, and absolutely power corrupts absolutely". Joe
