I am planning to moved to Riverside, CA (south) sometime this summer and was wondering how the market on the as/400 in CA. I have been on this field for more than 10 years starting from S/36 to S/38 and AS/400 now iSeries. I am currenly a Sr P/A as well as AS/400 systems and database administrator in a pharmaceutical company here in North Carolina. I am very much proficient in RPGIII, RPGIV, RPGILE, CL and now will start working on WSDc (just waiting for the CD - I will upgrade our systems from v4.5 to 5.1 right after christmas). My expertise include BPCS-ERP which is I am the Technical Support and the current application I am maintaining in our shop (This include SCM, MRP, QMS, SFC, AR, AP, GL.) I am also experience SQL, Stored Procedure and Crystal Report Writing 8.5. As an AS/400 administrator, my responsibilities includes configuration, security and upgrades (PTFs). I have setup WAS, TPC/IP, HTTP and SMTP on our iSeries. I have training on JAVA, Servlets and JSP and VB6. I have been a consultant for 5 years here in USA and now works as a fulltime as/400 P/A for about 2 years. hope you can give me a feedback about the market situation in CA. Thanks Sky

Sky, Word on the street (from my friendly head hunters) is that the market is starting to get hot. The Southern California area has been practically recession-free (unlike the northern portion of California). The L.A. area, in particular, has always been a hotbed of AS/400 shops. Plenty of big names, including the largest AS/400 (iSeries) shop are located here. Plus plenty of names you may have never heard of also. While the Riverside area is a tad east of where the hot action is, I actually have a programmer that commutes from Riverside (to Chatsworth) every day. Sky, I would love to tell you how great the job market is in Southern California, but the reality is that we are in the same slump as the rest of the IT field in every other part of the country. I have been a recruiter in this market (AS/400 and Southern California) for 29 years and this is the worst recession I have seen in terms of IT jobs. It's like the movie Perfect Storm. We were due for a recession anyway about 2001 or so, but we were hit with excess(justified)spending on Y2K in 1999, lack of spending on IT hardware and software starting in January 2000 and continuing today, the dot.com-dot.bomb of spring 2000, over abundance of H1-B programmers, the stock market tumbling, financial reporting scandals, etc. Well, you get the picture. Things are begining to happen, and the good news is that I beleive the worst is behind us. I expect that after January 1, we will start seeing a modest improvement in job openings with each month that passes. It won't be back to the frantic pace of '98-'99 for another year or two. Expect it to take 4 to 8 weeks to land a good job once you get here. You can possibly get a jumb on things and improve timing by advance contact with a recruiter like myself. Most companies are reluctant to talk to candidates that are not already located in their state or near vicinity. The reason is that they don't know how serious a person is about relocating. I had the same problem when I relocated from the east coast. Have references and letters of recommendation in hand when you relocate. Know what to expect in terms of housing cost. Salaries in our area are pretty darn near the top with only New York City and surrounding metropolitan area(#1) and San Francisco (#2) barely edging out L.A. area.
