FYI - 10/20/00
If you're an AS/400 Network Expert (ANE) technical journal subscriber or an
AS/400 Network Expert Alert (ANE Alert) email newsletter subscriber, we are
changing the names of these publications at the beginning of November. The
AS/400 Network Expert technical journal will now be called Midrange Network
Expert starting with the November-December issue that ships in a week or two
and the AS/400 Network Expert Alert (ANE Alert) will be renamed to the Midrange
Network Expert Alert (MNE Alert) starting with the November 2nd issue.
I announced the name change in yesterday's ANE Alert and we will also be
discussing the name change at next week's COMMON.
MC will also be creating a new URL link for the Midrange Network Expert Web
site that will also be available in November. All links to the present Web site
at http://www.midrangecomputing.com/ane will be redirected to the new link when
it becomes available so you won't lose any active links you currently have.
For the rationale behind this move, please find an excerpt below from my
November-December editorial letter that explains the changes.
Thanks to all our subscribers.
Joe Hertvik
subscription to the weekly Midrange Network Expert Alert email)
************Excerpt from Nov-December Midrange Network Expert editorial letter
The Ripple Effect
Following IBM's lead, we're changing our name this issue from AS/400 Network
Expert to Midrange Network Expert (MNE). Given IBM's strategy shift, we've
decided to rededicate our own networking coverage for connecting AS/400-iSeries
400 computers to the Internet. This includes the key networking solutions
you've always turned to us for:
· Integrating OS/400-based computers into heterogeneous networks of Windows,
Novell, Linux, and UNIX servers
· Exchanging OS/400 files with the desktop and the Web
· Accessing OS/400 servers from a Web browser
· Working with client-to-OS/400 software (such as IBM's Client Access product
line and alternatives) as well as Web-to-OS/400 software packages (such as
IBM's WebSphere Host Integration Solution and competitors)
· Configuring OS/400 servers to work in a TCP/IP environment
· OS/400 printing over the network and the Internet
· 5250 Terminal emulation
· Integrating OS/400-based servers into emerging technology networking
environments, such as wireless networks
These specific networking techniques work in an area that is much larger than
the AS/400-iSeries 400 itself, the midrange network. And it's our publication's
mission to teach you how to integrate your OS/400-based computers into the
midrange network, hence the name change to Midrange Network Expert. We'll
continue to provide all of the information you need to configure your
OS/400-based machines for Internet and network access. Written by the best
names in the industry, Midrange Network Expert is your one-stop source for
easy-to-understand, detailed connectivity and interoperability information in
an OS/400 environment.
But what about midrange network news? For networking news, we also produce the
weekly Midrange Network Expert Alert (MNE Alert), formerly known as the AS/400
Network Expert Alert. Delivered by email every Thursday, MNE Alert keeps pace
with breaking news and events in the midrange networking community through a
mixture of analysis, information, live links to relevant stories on the
Internet, and humor (for subscription info, go to the Midrange Network Expert
Alert subscription page,
http://www.midrangecomputing.com/mnealert/subscribe.cfm). MNE Alert keeps you
up-to-date with all the news and links we post daily on the Midrange Network
Expert Web site (http://www.midrangecomputing.com/ane). MNE Web edition is one
of the fastest moving OS/400-based sites on the Web and a great place to go for
information on what's happening now in the midrange networking world.
Taken together, the Midrange Network Expert product line--Midrange Network
Expert; the Midrange Network Expert Alert email newsletter; and the MNE Web
site--provide a complete view of what's happening in the midrange network world
and how to configure and run your AS/400-iSeries 400 computers in that world.
Midrange Network Expert provides detailed tutorials on how your AS/400-iSeries
machine interacts with the Internet while Midrange Network Expert Alert and the
MNE Web site provide news and fast-breaking information on where the midrange
network is going today. Together, they're a complete package for all your
AS/400-iSeries 400 connectivity and interoperability needs.
*****************************
