IBM to "Green" Its Data Centers 9 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I had the luxury of attending the Computer World "Infrastructure Management World" conference last month and met the man in charge of the Greening of IBM. Their plan is ripe with System z and Linux partitions. I asked if he looked at System i. His comments were none too pleasant and he indicated his perception of the strong superiority of System z. He also commented on the fact that the System z group has not shed too many bodies of late as compared to the significant numbers dropping off the Rochester contingent. I have no access to these numbers but would be curious...
Regards,
Mike

Hey Mike,
It's clear that the System i folks are going through a subtle reorganization in which the platform support is being divided between the high-end and the low-end. At the same time, the z'ers within IBM have never been very keen on the AS/400 branch of the business, so his "unpleasant" remarks may be more cultural than factual.
There's a good body of evidence that for large organizations, the z is the more flexible box -- though it requires significantly larger support. The article above talks about relative support and power savings, not about which box is better suited to achieve the savings that IBM is promoting.
