I'm about half way through the book 'The Earth Is Flat'. By flat, the author means that the worldwide communication infrastructure and the use of computers, enhanced by a lot of smart people and the breakdown of artificial barriers means that open source and collaboration will win over and eventually wipe out proprietary systems.
If IBM can't figure out how to sell its product, or even adequately explain it so that someone's imagination can fire up, then consider it lost. Why would anyone want to tie into a closed system when in a couple of years an essentially free system of similar and growing power will probably come about?
Just as IBM jumped on the Apache and Linux bandwagons a few years ago, maybe they can hitch up with RedHat and go native.
