TechTip: Handling Archived and Zip File Formats the Open-Source Way
Max,
Good article...but what about the iSeries?
For those of you wondering about just that question. The iSeries comes loaded with a Unix utility called JAR. By using JAR in the QSHell environment you can Zip and un-Zip files in the IFS. The best part about this is that you can automate the process. For instance, I have a client that receives a dozen or so ZIPped files from their billing company every day. These files used to have to be manually unZipped using one of the Windows utilities (PKZip or WINZip, etc...) before they could be processed by the iSeries. By using the JAR utility combined with FTP the entire process is now automated.
