I searched for "QTVDEVICE" on MCPRESS online (search area = entire site)-I remember somebody asked that question - and got funny result: that was you again asking the same question on Jun 3 & 4 2002 (:-)
Check it out.
Tali,
Yes, sigh. And I guess I'll keep asking it until there's an answer. The
one that Anne gave in June was a cut/paste from IBM's site. It didn't help
explain why a telnet server is eating up 25% of my CPU when we don't use
telnet. (Is Client Access considered Telnet?)
These jobs are part of the Telnet server (you have both QTVTELNET and QTVDEVICE jobs, both associated with Telnet). If you are using Client Access, PCOMM, etc. then you *are* using Telnet! I am always surprised to hear people say "we do not use Telnet, we use Client Access" - it means we haven't done a good job getting the word out about Telnet.
The QTVDEVICE jobs are responsible for getting/freeing the virtual devices for your Telnet Session and other session establishment issues.

In the QSYSWRK subsystem I have four jobs running called QTVDEVICE. These
jobs take up LOTS of CPU time. Much more than CFINT01. Sometimes as much
as 25% of the CPU time is devoted to QTVDEVICE.

I look at the job logs and I see thousands of messages (CPF8902) that say
that it can't get a device because it's in use by another job.

Periodically there's a message saying that the message queue has wrapped.

What's up with this? Seems like a very expensive system job.
I have seen these particular jobs pop up more frequently, using more CPU %. I have done a google search and found nothing. I only find a few answers here.
Does anyone know where I can get more specific answers to a way to control these jobs? Perhaps try to make them more efficient? We just converted a number of documents to the IFS this weekend and now I am noticing more CPU useage on these jobs. Surely they do not just exist for TELNET jobs. Why would they need so much CPU? Do these take away from our "Interactive CPU Limit"?
