The latest release of HomeRun has improved prioritization of index recommendations, the ability to better pinpoint jobs for data collection, filter support on i5/OS V5R2 and higher, and implementation of advice outside of the HomeRun product.

Centerfield has announced an updated version of its groundbreaking autonomic tools targeted at DB2 for i5/OS.

Elvis Budimlic, development director for Centerfield, said, "Since the introduction of our autonomic database administrator (AutoDBA) last year, we've received tremendous feedback from our customers and many suggestions on how to make it even better. So our team enhanced HomeRun based on that feedback to make the function easier to use and flexible. HomeRun 6.1 provides long sought enhancements that allow customers to collect deepest level of SQL performance data specifying particular current or group user, Web server or fat client IP address, library filter, and more, which is then analyzed and followed by index advice from six different sources," he said.

AutoDBA, the name of the new component introduced last year, provides expert DB2 advice and options to automatically implement changes, the company says. The first release focused on fully optimizing DDS logical files and SQL indices with the objective of making SQL and RPG programs that process large amounts of data much more efficient.

With HomeRun V6.1, IBM System i shops get:

  • Improved prioritization of index recommendations to ensure they are getting the most value from every new index.
  • The ability to further pinpoint jobs for data collection by current user profile, current group profile, IP address, and by range of IP addresses.
  • The ability to filter by this additional criterion is supported on i5/OS releases V5R2 and higher.
  • Expert advice generated by AutoDBA can now be implemented outside of the HomeRun product using information surfaced in the graphical interface. This allows shops full control over when and how changes are made to optimize DB2 while still retaining most of the benefits of auditing and the ability to easily undo changes.
  • Advice related to the use of "clustered indexes" has been reorganized to make it easier to identify the candidate index.
