New toolset improves data quality while facilitating lowering end-user computing costs.
A new connectivity/data management toolset designed for companies operating on the IBM i is now available from vLegaci’s subsidiary, QuickerApps. The tool set, composed of QuickerApps/400 and QuickerApps/DM, enables Intuit QuickBase users to import data directly from IBM i tables. In addition, the tool set allows IT to monitor the ad hoc databases created by those users. QuickBase is a SaaS tool meant for end-users to create and manage their own databases hosted by Intuit in the same secure facilities that host thousands of online QuickBooks and TurboTax user files. The new QuickerApps tool set facilitates extraction of data from IBM i tables into QuickBase tables and helps IT management to control the spread of corporate data from IT systems into user-created databases.
Steve Kilner, vLegaci president, referred to studies by Strategic Research Corp. and IDC that estimate the amount of corporate data under user management at anywhere from 50-75 percent. Typically, this data is not managed for quality or other IT standards, yet is widely used in business operations and decision-making processes.
"By increasing both data quality and ease-of-use for user-created data, a business can realize the benefits from end-user computing while minimizing the risks,” said Kilner. “This new toolset makes importing IBM i data a single step process, thereby reducing errors.”
Many businesses have dozens, if not hundreds of user-created databases scattered across many servers, with little or no insight into their contents. Kilner added, “QuickBase allows businesses to consolidate the database activities of their users and lower their costs by drastically reducing hardware and software purchases and the requisite supporting labor. Our new tool, QuickerApps/DM, further enhances this consolidation, by enabling administrators to inspect data schema across all user databases. For example, they can locate all user tables containing ‘Customer Number’ to ensure the accuracy of the data.”
