Protecting Your Passwords on IBM i

Many recent hacks have accessed networks and then accessed databases by obtaining administrator credentials (user IDs and passwords). Databases of emails and passwords are also being stolen from breached organizations. Carol discusses how to reduce password abuse.

carol woodburyWritten by Carol Woodbury

You may not realize it, but many of the organizations recently breached are large IBM i shops. The general public never knows whether our beloved IBM i was breached because that information is never published. But to dismiss the possibility out of hand and ignore steps that you can take to protect your organization and—more importantly—the data on your IBM i systems is putting that data at significant risk. This article focuses on protecting passwords since exploiting stolen credentials (user IDs and passwords) is one method being used by hackers to gain access to data.

Book Review: Subfiles in Free-Format RPG

Whether you're a newbie or a seasoned pro, this book has something for you.

Why the Zend Conference Matters to IBM i Folks

Each of us is an evangelist for the i, a voice heard in the wilderness. But to make that voice heard, we need to get out there where the people who are not part of our "i world" live.

david shireyWritten by David Shirey

I just got back from ZendCon, the annual conference for Zend, the people who bring you PHP and its interface on the IBM i.

It was a great experience and not just because of the weather. Santa Clara, California, in October. Sunny skies, exceptionally nice temps in the low 70s. Even though the hotel was connected to the convention center, I went out of my way to walk outside coming and going.

The API Corner: Saving Only Physical Files in a Library

It's easily done by using the List Objects and Save Object List APIs.

bruce viningWritten by Bruce Vining

I recently received a note from Ray J. that included the following:

"I save and restore physical files from one system to another. The libraries contain both physical and logical files. I would like to save and restore only the physical files. However, using the omit parameter on the SAVOBJ commands only allows a few hundred omits, and I have more than 300 omits and more than 1000 files. The best I have come up with so far is to display the object description of all the *FILES, run a query, and output a file containing the names of only *FILES with attribute PF. Then read that file and save each object one at a time. That seems like a lot of overhead. Any other suggestions?"

In the Wheelhouse: Green-Screen Management Is Dead

Our community deserves so much better than to languish about managing our systems via the green-screen.

steve pitcherWritten by Steve Pitcher

I was at the COMMON User Group Fall Conference and Expo a few weeks ago, where I presented a session called "Modernizing Systems Management with IBM Navigator for i." The overall turnout for the conference was pretty good, considering it was a fall conference and Indianapolis isn't the warmest place on Earth at the tail end of October.

I had a number of purposes for this session. The first was to update perceptions of IBM i administrators. While there is a time and place for the command line, the idea of managing a modern system exclusively through a text-based interface is old school.
