A new assessment utility makes it easy to keep stored procedures and functions synchronized!

kent milligan 117x117Written by Kent Milligan

As more IBM i applications utilize stored procedures and user-defined functions, processes must be put in place to manage these routines just like traditional IBM i program objects. You need to make sure the stored procedures and functions are moved from your development system to production system to ensure that that the application is able to run. Likewise, if you have a backup system that's used for disaster recovery, the routines also need to be propagated to the backup system.

Implement these user-defined functions to save space when storing large amounts of data.

Written by Michael Sansoterra

In modern applications, it's typical to store large amounts of text data, including emails, rich text documents, audit logs, and XML. Recording this information in a database table can impose a significant tax on disk space. However, using a compression algorithm can alleviate this tax. In this tip, I'll demonstrate two user-defined functions that implement ZLib compression to deflate and inflate data that is stored or accessed via DB2 as a large object data type (BLOB, CLOB, and XML).

In my previous article in this series, TechTip: DB2 Web Query and Excel Spreadsheets: Easy as Pie! Part II, I showed you some DB2 Web Query techniques that generated multiple worksheets within an Excel spreadsheet. In this article, we continue the discussion on combining these two technologies by focusing on two special Excel output format options: Excel with Formulas and Pivot Tables.

Emulate the window aggregate functions available on other database platforms.

A friend recently asked me how to convert a particular Oracle query to SQL Server 2005. The query contained a column expression that looked like this (modified and simplified):

SELECT AVG(AMOUNT)

OVER(ORDER BY TDATE ROWS BETWEEN 6 PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW)

FROM ORDER_SUMMARY

ORDER BY AMOUNT DESC

Access Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, and other databases with IBM i queries.

Businesses today have grown or evolved into multi-platform organizations. Often, the best available or most affordable software for one area of the business resides on a platform that's different from other areas.

Some of the most widely used Customer Relationship Management (CRM) packages run on a PC platform such as Microsoft SQL Server or MySQL, but many accounting or production (ERP) packages rely on the dependable IBM i with DB2 as the built-in database.

Partner TechTip: Is Your Query Tool Right for You? PDF Print E-mail

Users need a flexible query tool that is powerful and easy to use.

heath kathWritten by Heath Kath

Is your query tool up to date and function-rich? Are you able to build queries that end users, managers, and departments can use? Can it collect data from or send data to other systems or platforms? Does it provide run-time prompting? Does it handle data-mapping errors, especially around numeric date fields? Does it take advantage of SQL Query Engine (SQE) to improve run-time performance? Does it provide multiple interfaces—green-screen, Web browser, and GUI? Can it send query results directly to a PC document (.xlsx, PDF, text, HTML, etc.)?

Use these new functions to easily extend your applications to the web.

Written by Michael Sansoterra

If you've been waiting for a DB2 for i feature that is unprecedented in power and simplicity, get ready to become "unhinged." Further, prepare to hammer on your IBM i admin to install the latest database fixes, because DB2 for i 7.1 Group PTF Level 22 introduces a suite of functions that allow developers to make all manner of HTTP requests. (Actually, Level 22 had a problem, so you should skip right to the latest level, which is currently 23.) Right out of the box and without fancy programming, your apps can easily speak to a cloud server or intranet application server to download a file, contact a web service, or retrieve the source of a web page, to name a few possibilities.
