Any discussion of free database servers should include Postgresql. Postgresql is probably the most advanced open source database in existence. All the things that MySQL is trying to add -- triggers, referential integrity, foreign keys, etc. -- have been in Postgresql for years now. Also worth looking at is EnterpriseDB, which is a company marketing Postgresql with interfaces and code that they claim makes it a drop-in replacement for Oracle. And of course there is Firebird, another open source database I\'m not really familiar with, but that seems to be well-regarded and fairly easy to set up and use.

Teradata has long offered a demo CD that installs a 2Gb Teradata database, some Teradata Database Management tools, and a fantastic Ad Hoc SQL tool. It is free; they ship you a CD at no cost (which means you have an "issue" CD for reinstallation when necessary); and the Ad Hoc Query tool is really fantastic (and connects to all kinds of SQL databases).
