Company says HA stands for "highly affordable."

Bug Busters Software Engineering today announced Release 8.4 of RSF-HA, the high availability version of Bug Busters' flagship RSF product.

RSF-HA is a complete high availability and data replication solution for the System i platform, priced significantly lower than the competition. To Bug Busters, HA means "highly affordable" as well as high availability, the company says. RSF adds a new Compare Feature, a new Archive/Refresh feature, more role swap improvements, and numerous other enhancements.

New Compare Feature

With this release, users of RSF can compare the contents of any two libraries or IFS directories to see if they match. A list of non-identical objects can be displayed, printed or sent to an out file. Various options let users specify how deep to dig when comparing objects.

For a fast comparison that's still highly reliable, you can compare object attributes alone. In the case of database files, this would include key file attributes, record length, the current number of records, the number of deleted records and more.

For extra precision, RSF can be directed to compare file data as well. If even a single byte in the files differs, RSF will let you know.

You can compare every object in a library, or filter by object type and generic name. And, the items being compared can be on the same or different systems. The ability to compare libraries and directories provides extra assurance when the libraries or directories are assumed to match, as with archived libraries or libraries replicated for high availability. If it turns out some objects do differ, you can direct RSF to fix the problem by flagging those objects to be refreshed at the next HA synchronization interval.

The new compare feature is included in both the Base and HA versions of RSF.

New Archive/Refresh Feature

Another new set of RSF tools lets you take a snapshot of a library or IFS directory, experiment with the data, making any changes you like, and then refresh the library or directory, putting it back to the state it had before any changes were made.

These tools are ideally suited for manipulating test environments or validating libraries after a role swap. Key questions after a role swap are, "Are all of my files here and is all of the data correct?"  In this situation, running user programs to exercise and check the data can be useful, but a way is needed to undo any changes these user tests might make. The new archive/refresh functions make this job easy.

When a library is refreshed, changes made since the date/time the library was archived are reversed.  In particular:

  • New objects are deleted
  • Missing objects are restored
  • Changed objects are restored to their archived state, including any changes to *PUBLIC or private authorities

The new archive/refresh feature is included in both the Base and HA versions of RSF.

Role-Swap Enhancements

Role-swap allows you to quickly switch production work to the backup machine when needed for routine maintenance or in the event of an emergency.

RSF 8.4 continues to improve the role-swap process. A new checkpoint restart capability allows you to restart the role-swap process right where it left off in the event that the process was interrupted for any reason. Now, new status messages keep you informed of exactly where you are in the role-swap process.

Complete Solution

RSF-HA 8.4 allows you to replicate everything:

  • Libraries
  • IFS directories
  • User profiles
  • System values
  • Network attributes
  • Authorization lists
  • Configuration information
  • Data queues
  • Object-level authorities
  • Spooled files
  • Message queues
  • Data areas
  • And more...

Database record changes on the target machine are processed by unique key, greatly increasing flexibility and integrity.  RSF determines the appropriate unique key access path automatically.

Two-way mirroring is supported, allowing updates to occur to the same files on multiple systems simultaneously.

Competitively Priced

The RSF High Availability feature is licensed separately.  This complete solution is available for a fraction of the cost of traditional HA implementations.

Free Trial

Free 30-day trials for RSF 8.4 can be downloaded from Download
