JDA Software Group, Inc. has announced that St. Paul, Minn.-based Gander Mountain, a leading outdoor lifestyle retailer, has realized substantial labor savings and efficiency gains using JDA Portfolio software. Portfolio Workforce Management (PWM) has helped the retailer realize up to 25 percent savings in overtime dollars by ensuring the optimum customer-to-employee ratio in every department at the company's 105 stores, according to JDA. Gander Mountain had 2005 sales of $804.5 million and employs approximately 75 full- and part-time associates in each store.

According to Ron Reitmeier, Gander Mountain's manager of store operations, labor management and new stores, the retailer migrated from disparate applications to an enterprise labor management solution to better serve customers, achieve cost savings, and realize other efficiencies. It also wanted to leverage PWM's capabilities to enable fast action on impending overtime, under-staffing, and other performance indicators.

"PWM is able to forecast when each sale will occur and builds staffing levels based on expected sales and traffic patterns in the store. By scheduling the right number of people at the right time in the right departments, we can ensure that our customers will be served by the most knowledgeable associates," explained Reitmeier. "By helping us optimize our labor demands, PWM has helped us to realize up to a 25 percent savings in overtime dollars."

"AMR Research recently predicted that sales of workforce management applications will grow an average of 16 percent per year through 2010," said Wayne Usie, senior vice president, retail for JDA. "With the results that Gander Mountain and other JDA customers are achieving with our solution, it is clear to see why workforce management software is among the fastest growing."

To be fiscally responsible during the implementation, Gander Mountain minimized travel costs by requiring that as much work as possible be done remotely over the telephone or via web conferences. Gander Mountain also did training and configuration work remotely when possible. The implementation was done under strict time constraints. For its maintenance needs, Gander Mountain relies on JDA's Customer Support team.
