Development teams continue to enhance Symphony as IBM bundles it with Lotus Notes and Sametime in a move to edge Microsoft off the desktop.

IBM Lotus released V1.1 of Symphony last week, a release that runs significantly faster than the earlier V1.0 and features mail-merge functions using .nsf files.

 

Users had been waiting for some time for the ability to do a direct mail merge between a document and their Notes Contacts address book or other Notes database file without going through a time-consuming file conversion. This will further enhance the value of Symphony for Notes users, many of whom still switch back and forth between Notes and Microsoft Office (including this reporter). Others simply forego the Notes Contacts (Personal Name and Address Book in 7.X) altogether in favor of Microsoft Outlook.

Psychologists this summer have identified a new emotional syndrome spreading among IT professionals: it's called iPhone-envy.

 

Thankfully, both the "other" kind of envy--identified by Freud at the turn of the 20th Century as occurring among young girls when they realize they don't have the equipment that their brothers possess--and iPhone-envy are treatable! With the "other" kind of envy (which, to be honest, has today been largely discredited), the girl eventually grows up, transfers her interest from her father to an older guy with a Harley, gets married, and lives happily ever after (right!).

News and highlights from the O'Reilly Open Source Convention in Portland, Oregon.

The tenth O'Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON) kicked off on Monday, July 21, in Portland, Oregon, at the Oregon Convention Center. The first two days of the convention offered four-hour tutorial sessions in the morning and afternoon for attendees wishing to pay extra costs, aside from the normal exposition ticket, to attend the tutorials. Those sessions included everything as light-hearted as learning to use the GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) and toying with the Neuros DVR set-top box, to more advanced topics like mastering the Perl programming language and learning TCP/IP troubleshooting tips and techniques. With OSCON offering over 30 tutorials in those first two days, it was difficult to choose only four sessions.

Dell's announcement this week of new laptop designs marks the state of the art in a long and arduous road toward building the ideal portable computer.

This week's announcement by Dell that it's introducing a new line of Latitude and Precision laptop and mobile workstation computers that extend battery life, increase durability with Flash RAM drives, and sport backlit keyboards (so we all can take notes in the movie theater and write reviews like Roger Ebert) likely will be this year's entry into laptop history.

The two hallmarks of the 2008 Olympics are that all TV broadcasts will be in high definition and that all events will be streamed live to our computers.

The 2008 Summer Olympic Games begin in Beijing today, and the event marks several technology milestones, not the least of which is that it will be the largest television event in the history of the medium.

 

For the next 17 days, NBC Universal will provide around-the-clock high-definition TV coverage through its affiliates and cable networks. Of interest to technophiles, it also will be streaming thousands of hours of live broadband coverage over the Internet to computer users in the United States using Microsoft's new Silverlight technology. (Adobe has contracted with CCTV.com for Olympics Web coverage of the Games for distribution in China using Flash technology).

IBM Power Systems had a "great quarter," according to Ross Mauri, general manager of IBM Power Systems, who recently returned from a five-week trip around the world, speaking with more than 10,000 customers in 20 countries. The trip, during which Mauri and staff also gave IBM Business Partners a few pointers on how to enhance the value of IBM products and services, sounded like part victory tour, part sales trip, and, undoubtedly, part fact-finding mission that probably exceeded the miles flown by most world leaders trying to generate support for a major foreign policy initiative.

 

When he came home, Mauri was pleased with the numbers being reported in the second quarter company financials....
