It’s October and that means two very important things:
One, I get to impose my yearly Sheriff of Nottingham-style 10 percent candy tax on my three kids after Halloween. And two, IBM has released its fall announcement for IBM i, in this case the news that IBM i 7.3 Technology Refresh 1 and 7.2 Technology Refresh 5 have been announced.
Before reading the end of this article, someone will seriously ponder if they could market gluten-free cloud servers.

A few weeks ago, I was speaking with a colleague at another company who had a major virus headache. From what they could gather, a user opened a zip file from an email that turned out to be a fantastic cryptolocker variant. First, it managed to encrypt everything on that user’s laptop, and then it proceeded to lock down files on every shared drive on which the user had write access. And did it ever.

Last month, I wrote a piece about the future of IBM Notes/Domino called “The Domino 9.0.2 Waiting Game” in which I lamented at the lack of, well, Domino 9.0.2.
Lo and behold, just last week IBM put out an announcement for an update: Notes and Domino 9.0.1 Fix Pack 7. With a whopping 81 fixes combined between client and server since the last update in May 2016, the collective sigh from the IBM Domino user and ISV community certainly wasn’t heard ‘round the world.

I told Adam I wasn’t a developer up front, but I wanted him to explain just exactly how my small-to-medium-sized business with an investment in on-premises infrastructure could really take advantage of Bluemix. I wasn’t disappointed.

Data analytics via the cloud will surely play a big role in many enterprises' futures, but can we rely on the inference some could draw that the IBM i is fading from view everywhere else except in companies already committed to the platform?

The maturing of the IBM i market has been with us for some years, but the quality of that maturation sparks debate. Does the platform's current state, along with such other factors as IBM's boosting of Watson, mean the IBM i has reached a point in its life cycle where decline is inevitable, or has it simply reached an equilibrium at which it will continue to thrive for the foreseeable future?

My company is going through a wholesale ERP migration. At this point, we've gone live with accounts payable and general ledger of a new ERP system that runs side by side with the traditional RPG-based green-screen applications. It's a bit of a process of course, moving it piecemeal. Some things can go easily. Some take a bit more work.
