October OCEAN Meeting - FREE Webinar

PHP Experts Erwin Earley & Clark Everetts of Zend by Perforce

5:45 pm PT - Sound Check/Social Time

6:00 pm PT - From Zero to PHP - One and Done

Event location:This will be a remote-only event. We will not be meeting in person.

From Zero to PHP - One and Done: Think PHP is hard? Think again! In this session we will take a look at the installation of PHP and show how in one easy step we can have a PHP complete with database driver and ILE integration. We will even show demo scripts (perhaps live!!) to prove the point. After the installation we will take a look at various functions and features of the Zend Server application server for managing the PHP application environment. The session will explore the structure of how the PHP engine runs on the platform including a description of the subsystem employed and some basic troubleshooting. The session will also take a look at the 5250-based management system (zsmenu) for managing the configuration files, jobs, and subsystems, as well as the Zend Server Web GUI for working with various features including server configuration management, monitoring, and root cause analysis. We will also take a look at the community PHP, what it brings to the IBM i community, and how it differs from the solution stack delivered with Zend Server.

Erwin Earley: With over 20 years working in the IBM i community previously at IBM and now with Zend by Perforce, I have worked with a number of technologies on the POWER platform including cloud (PowerVC), Dev/Ops solutions (Docker, Chef), Open Source technologies (Linux, MySQL/MariaDB, PHP). I have expertise in a variety of technologies including virtualization, storage, networking, and operating systems including AIX, IBM i, and Linux. I am a frequent speaker at various user groups and technical conferences and have authored numerous articles on Linux, PHP, virtualization, and systems management.

Clark Everetts works for Zend by Perforce as a Senior Professional Services Consultant, helping clients innovate, meet business needs, and build better web applications through architecture and performance audits, mentoring in software development best practices, and guiding them using PHP and Zend Server to build, deploy, and manage web apps and services. Currently, he's performing multi-million line codebase migrations to current versions of PHP and frameworks. He began programming in Motorola 6809 assembler and BASIC an uncomfortably long time ago, studied everything from distributed computing to databases to AI in grad school, wrote embedded software for the Defense Department and NASA, took up PHP in 2005, and was introduced to the IBM i and its community in 2012. He enjoys the fresh, open source breezes blowing across the IBM i landscape.
