Difficult to predict outcomes but as most of the IT industry has taken to a patent frenzy to supposedly eliminate competition, it would seem that the payoff is nothing more than that - a payoff. If you go to the bathroom it's a patent violation. If Sun's really bleeding cash and no one will pay for basic Java, there's really nothing left but to return to the server business and see if they can survive. Aligning with MS only bolsters those on the fence and makes the .Net decision easier. IBM centric companies clearly will feel even more comfortable now. Sun has clearly failed. Java has become more and more proprietary with IBM, BEA and Oracle huge enterprise offerings. Sun survive, maybe but Java has already transferred ownership.
