Article Quote: But they still raise some real-world questions. For instance, has programming at the academic level slipped back into the Ivory Tower discipline of the 1970s? Opinion: No. These types of problems asks participants to think outside the box. I assume the columnar memorization that started the article was satire. If not, then this is an example of why RPG was not part of the competition. Why? Basically ... who cares about columnar output presentation and rote keyword memorization? Thee will always be a need for accountant - analyst - programmers. However, this is not difficult to do. Thinking and creating is difficult. Also, these are the types of problems that are used to develop programs that replace programmers. Look at the linear optimization question. Nobody will write this for a 1 time job. Excel can do it out of the box. A programmer might be called on to write a systems oriented program that can solve all types of linear optimization problems -- or be tasked to buy a copy of Matlab and have it do the work.

You seem surprised that the US does not rank and that enrollment in the IT related courses is down... Why would any student choose a field of study in which the job market is moving off-shore? Seems like the students get it. Seems like the off-shore resources get IT (pun intended).

Very well put. Academia gets it just as well. Course offerings are down precipitously in the U.S. Colleges and Universities have decided that the curiculae is simply not worth the effort. Dave
