Ah, it's always great to hear from my fans. Just out of curiosity, how much are you willing to pay? Offer me enough money and I'll promise not to move into your neighborhood.

I have just such a gadget. Most people probably wouldn't recognize it as such, but I have a simple demonstration of its efficacy: Joel has NEVER lived in my neighborhood. Contact me for pricing.

So, if teenagers can hear the high-pitched sounds, why can't they hear the normal tones? If you talk to them in a regular, conversational voice, you always get back "huh?". Maybe someone could invent a device that would convert conversational speech into the high pitched sounds they hear. I suppose you would only get back the "huh?" in a high-pitched response. Sigh.

Yes, but you can prove only that yours has worked flawlessly SO FAR. I can promise that mine will continue to work in the future. So my gadget is worth way more than yours. By the way, can you provide me with the name of a good real estate agent that works in your neighborhood. I may need to gain a competitive advantage over you.

If you want to test their hearing, try speaking in a normal, conversational voice the following words: "Would you like a hundred bucks that you can spend any way you like." If they don't respond I'd definitely consider having your teenager fitted with a hearing aid. Or not. Whatever works best for you.

I guess Sir Paul got answer to his questions. His first one left him much before 64 and even the second one failed to tolerate him before being 64. Ah! it was summer of 69 and I was in grade 6. My school was holding a fund raiser fair. I was selling snack in my pavillion and saw my former classmate next to the juke box. She was an absolute beauty and way out of my league, hence never gave a look to me. I did not exist for her. She put a coin and played "Oh Bla Di Oh Bla Da". I left my pavillion and put a coin and replayed it. Then all the boys followed me and she was profoundly disturbed of what I started. LOL.

Hi Hassan, I rarely read gossip, but, while I'm not as old as Paul McCartney, I am old enough to have grown up with the Beatles (if you were in grade 6 in 69 then I'm probably a little, although not much, older than you), so I notice stories about the Beatles. One of the articles I read to research the intro for this week's column said that Paul and Linda (his first wife) were deeply in love. She died of cancer. The article also said that, rather than, as you suggested, the second one failing to tolerate him before being 64, Paul left her because she failed to tell him about a previous career of hers in porno films. According to the article, he learned about it after a tabloid article came out about it and was upset about it, which was the cause of their breakup. (That article also said that the tabloid reported that she had also been a prostitute, but the article I read said she denies that. The article did not say anything about whether she is denying her porno career, presumably because their is filmed evidence.) I have no idea if any of that is true, but the Beatles were enough of a part of my childhood and teenagehood that I couldn't let the accusation go unchallenged. Joel

I think it was 1965 when Paul was thrown out of his hotel for bringing in an underaged prostitue! Beatles were the trend setters for the rockers to come i.e. doping, drinking, womanizing. They were not the innocent little boys the marketeers marketed as. Yes it was Paul who wrote the song "Why don't we do it on the road?". Need I say more? Well I always kept the personal life of artists seperate from their art. However when Karen died on Feb 4, 1983, I felt sick for many days (If you really are older than me, you know the Karen I am talking about).

Karen's angelic voice could be the greatest female voice ever. Her death, so early in her life was a tragedy and it opened up the national discussion about eating disorders. I didn't always like their music. I tended more toward the Stones, Sabbath, and Zepp. Although Richard was the writng, arranging, and recording talent, it was her voice that made them famous. When it was time to mellow out, there was no need for drugs or alcohol. Put on a '45, LP, or 8-track and her voice could make you melt. Time to dig out her version of Desperado, Horizon, 1975. It'll make you weak in the knees. Tom.

The Mosquito takes advantage of the fact that as people age they usually fall prey to a condition known as presbycusis or "aging ear," which results in the inability to hear high-frequency sounds. Unfortunately that's all I hear, and I think it's coming from inside my head! Or at least the right ear. rd

And to take this thread to it's extreme, perhaps one of the other most powerful voices ever to grace a stage was Janis Joplin, the persona most diametrically opposed to Karen Carpenter. The fact that the two could be popular at the same time on the same planet is a testimony to the incredibly vibrant music scene that existed in America and Britain in the 70's. (The fact that both succumbed to their inner demons early in life is another, sadder commentary on the economics of art and entertainment.) With few exceptions (most dead), the last two decades or so of music have been limp and formulaic by comparison. And while the Sex, Drugs and Rock'n'Roll lifestyle was certainly hedonistic to the extreme, I still think its message (perhaps minus the drugs) is far less harmful than the vapid (sampled and looped) drumbeat of "Bling" that underscores just about every facet of today's "entertainment" machine. Today's music scene, and the associated "wealth=worth" message of their TV counterparts would make Gordon Gekko proud. But that's just my couple of pennies. Joe

I just remember that once when I was in Pakistan, there were special electric lanterns importered from Japan. These lanterns looked like just another Japanese lantern but emitted a strange indigo like light. I was told Japanese research shows that this light attracts mosquitos. When they came very close, there was a well hidden electric wire around the bulb that electrocuted them! Ofcourse there was a plastic fence around that prevented electrocution of humans.
