This thread discusses the Content article: Is Al Barsa Jr.'s Passing the End of an Era or a Transition to the Next? Al Barsa's career represented one of the reasons why the IBM midrange was so successful for so long. Al always had the customer's benefit in mind -- even when he was going toe-to-toe with IBM over bits and bytes. As a business partner he knew first hand the obstacles that IBM was creating for the company's own success. Al's passing will leave an enormous vacancy in the System i community, where personality, good humor, dedication, and brilliance have always been welcomed. Those who knew Al personally were the lucky ones, but even those of us who were but passing acquaintances could recognize his contribution, and appreciated his merit. Within this community, COMMON will undoubtedly be hardest hit by Al's absence in the future. Who can take Al's place, standing before IBM, bringing truth to power? (And indeed, there is no doubt in my mind that Al would have a great deal to say about IBM's new Power offerings -- both laudatory and critical.) We've lost a champion for our community. Some of the lucky ones within the community have lost a good friend and colleague. He is missed already, and will be missed more sorely in the months and years ahead.
