Need to FTP when a file is updated - Trigger candidate

When a file is updated, I need to FTP another server to let it know that data has changed. I know how to notify the server but don't know how I will know when the file has been updated. Any ideas?

I have not used a trigger before and am not sure how to use it with the file. Can you help with some sample code or tips? Thanks.
