iSeries DB2/400 versus MS SQL Server 2000

I suppose if that's all the server does, it would make a very compelling case for MS. OTOH, the web site in question is only taking into account one function. If the server only performs the one function fine, but If you use a single machine to perform a multitude of server tasks, then you would also have to account for cost in the same fashion. In other words, you would have to accumulate the cost per transaction of your database server, then your web server, similarly your various application servers, data replicators, fax servers, etc. When your all done you may find that the integrated server (and yes the "i" in iseries stands for integrated) actually creates a greater cost savings. Then you would have to consider points of failure and downtime. One server in a bank of server can send a whole business reeling, while the AS/400 does have a reputation for uptime. Next you might have to think about the last time a DB2/400 server caught a virus. One should also mention the maintenance needed for SQL server, as opposed to DB2/400, and the fact that DB2/400 is and has been a 64-bit RDBMS since 1994. Just a thought Dave

And the winner is..... Microsoft SQL Server! The iSeries just isn't cutting it anymore. What happened IBM? See ya later... Go to the web site for the Transaction Processing Performance Council (www.tpc.org) and look around a bit. Five of the Top Ten TPC-C Results by Performance are SQL Server 2000 running on Win 2000 AS or Win 2003. ALL 10 of the Top Ten TPC-C by Price/Performance performers are SQL Server 2000 running on Win 2000 or Win 2003. They are all under $2.79 per tpmC! The IBM iSeries running v4r5 with DB2/400 was 51.58 US $ and 44.52 US $ That's 18 times the OLTP! ALL 10 of the Top Ten TPC-W Results by Performance (Web e-Commerce benchmark) were SQL Server 2000. ALL 10 of the Top Ten TPC-W Results by Price/Performance (Web e-Commerce benchmark) were SQL Server 2000.

Years ago vendors used to rate the machines in MIPS and how many MIPS more their machine had vs. the competition. A dedicated box for pulling DB transactions will be faster than one doing printing, faxing, and just being a usefull system, and not displaying the BSOD, not to mention prey for every virus writer out there. I would rather have slower TPC scores and reliablity over raw speed and crashes.
