  • EGL Open announcement at Rational conference

Good article, Chris. We created EGL CE to give more people the opportunity to learn and use EGL. We're very happy with the response and with the fact that the community of EGL users is growing!

We made a big announcement related to EGL at the Rational software conference (now called Innovate) this week in Orlando. The announcement is our proposal to create an open source project for EGL (both the language, compiler, and tools) at Eclipse.org. The full project proposal can be read here: http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/egl

The move to open source has been in the works for awhile. We believe open source will further expand the community of EGL users and will spur more innovation since others will be able to build new tools and extension to the tools and language. We also believe the move will make the technology less risky (we have heard a LOT of feedback from people saying they have concerns about adopting a language controlled by a single vendor).

We encourage your feedback and look forward to jointly developing EGL out in the open!

For those of you not familiar with EGL, in a nutshell: EGL is a higher-level programming language designed for business application development. EGL code compiles [currently] into COBOL, Java, and JavaScript. It can be used to build a full client/server solution, or can be used as a way to build modern, JavaScript-based Web UIs for existing business logic. EGL leverages popular, open technologies like Dojo Tookit, and can be extended to support other third-party widget libraries like ExtJS. With this integration, developers can continue coding in EGL, but take advantage of proven and evolving JavaScript libraries.
