Just an FYI for others who may try this. You would potentially have to explode an 8 (or 7 w/o check digit) digit number into it's 12 digit UPC before chaining to the UPC file.

Why not have a further test subroutine that takes the first 11 digits of a 12 digit item (13 of a 14 digit) and call T.L. Ashford's MOD10.. if the returned value equals the input, then the input was really a UPS or GTIN... if they do not equal, then then input must be an item number, or an invalid UPC. I work with a lot of "big box" retailers like Target, Wal-Mart, and Toys R Us... you would be very surprized to learn how often these guys screw up a manufacturer's UPC code (some refuse to fix the problem).

Yes good point especially since Jan 2005 is not far away at which point a valid GTIN could be EAN-8, EAN-13 or UPC-12. The proposed approach appears to be too error prone to either user miskeys or inventory master files not having the manufacturer's new UPC code. Going forward the client might want to identify the overlaps, i.e. 12 digit internal number with a valid check digit. And then look overtime to migrate to a non-conflicting number.
