  • The i5 gets Primetime exposure!

Any plans to advertise on "The Apprentice"? They could have the candidates run an IT project using the AS/400 or better yet, create a marketing buzz about a new release and/or feature. :-)

I'm just curious as to what demographic IBM intends to reach with Lost? Do they think corporate decision makers are watching Lost? chuck Opinions expressed are not necessarily those of my employer. Ok, well, I admit, I did watch the first two episodes. It took me a while but I finally realized that I didn't like it. It was slow, overly dramatic and pretty boring. Now, if they were to advertise on college football that'd probably garner many more decision makers. chuck Opinions expressed are not necessarily those of my employer. For a focused tv advertising buy I think IBM chose well with that lineup, with the shows being new or one timers and some buzz about them. Lost is a significant new show that is a ratings winner. It made my select list of tv shows to watch, so I'll see the ads. I think the concept of creating some buzz and name recognition is a good step by IBM in conjunction with accessing decision makers directly through print media in niche publications. I'm ticked that IBM positions the AS/400 as some kind of virtual server host, though. They don't do that for the RS/6000 and AIX, and their marketing weenies push the RS/6000 instead for data warehousing even in large AS/400 shops such as casinos, as we know from the stories on the casino that implemented their customer marketing system on the RS/6000 even though they ran the business on the AS/400. You can chalk that directly up to IBM marketing and their ignorance of the AS/400. rd

In all deference to Bill Robins, he is already sold. Susan Behrens has a good idea about advertising on "The Apprentice". IBM is still backing into advertising with the i5, which is singularly the outstanding announcement of the year in the industry with the inclusion of AIX, expansion of Linux partitions, the hardware announcements, and all the new i5/OS features. They should be all over the Sunday news programs and the marketing people should be on the daytime business news programs like CNBC. The marketing people should be fired. Get someone in there that knows what they have and tell the world outside the IBM community. We know what we have. Gary Zalaoras Consultant

A couple of people mentioned this in MIDRANGE-L. I'm excerpting Jon Paris' comments: Just heard from IBM that beginning on Sunday, December 5, IBM will launch an eServer i5 television ad in the U.S. on ABC primetime national programming, including the hot new show, LOST. Using the current IBM campaign format, the commercial humorously depicts Server Consolidation and introduces the eServer i5 system. Ads of course can change their time slot without warning, but this is the proposed schedule: The Five People You Meet In Heaven Sun 12/5/2004 8 -- 11pm LOST Weds 12/15/2004 8 -- 10pm Remember The Titans Sat 12/18/2004 8 -- 10pm Boston Legal Sun 12/19/2004 10 -- 11pm LOST Weds 12/22/2004 9 -- 10pm Boston Legal Sun 12/26/2004 10 -- 11pm Joe

IBM has never been willing to spend sufficient to tell the business world all the AS/400, iSeries, i5 can do.
