  • Issues with OS upgrade on tiny AS/400?

Hello Ken, I have performed an upgrade to V5R3 on a 170 without any issues whatsoever. I mainly use it for RPG development and performance analysis using iDoctor and SQL queries and it all functions very well. It has 1Gb of main memory. I would recommend you back it up and go for the upgrade. All the best. Regards, TheiSpecialist.com

Issues with OS upgrade on tiny AS/400?

We have an AS/400 model 170 at V5R1 and I am planning to upgrade to V5R3, the highest supported release. Has anyone any thoughts about this or heard of issues? It's a legacy system that just runs an RPG app; no SQL, ODBC, webserving, Java, PASE, VPN/SSL or anything else that I can think of that would be a load on the CPU. It runs with a low CPU load and has sufficient disk space for the upgrade. It currently has 256MB memory, which I am planning to increase to about 700 before the OS upgrade (replace a couple of 32MB modules with 256MBs). 256 is the "minimal config" that V5R3 needs. (I have worked with larger 400s in the past. We need it on V5R3 for proper DR and software support from IBM.) I know that with Windows, trying to run XP on a 98 machine is folly, but I figure a basic OS/400 install won't have as much bloat, comparably.

Ken, Be mindful of hardware compatibility. Several of the internal tape drives (e.g., 9406-3685), which were part of standard 170 eserver configurations, are NOT supported in v5r3. Another consideration is the processor model of the 170. Earlier processors were #2159/#2160 and 2164/2176/2183. After September 1998, IBM replaced these with: #2289/#2290/#2291/#2292/#2385/#2386/#2388. The processor type/age must be considered when selecting the appropriate memory modules. Good-Luck.
