I have never like the designated hitter idea either. I don't understand why pitchers aren't supposed to be able to hit. Babe Ruth handled batting pretty well.

I agree about the designated hitter. If baseball is about anything, it's about strategy, and when you take the pitcher coming to bat in a close game out of the picture, you lose a lot. I have to admit though, that I was routing for the Yankees. Even though they have smashed the hopes of the Rangers (my team) many a fall, I found myself routing for them just because they symbolized New York City. Well, in any case, it was a GREAT series. Only 5 months until we can start again!!

Barbara, I agree with you on the designated hitter thing. If it makes you feel any better, the designated hitter is still considered "experimental" by the American League. My favorite team was anyone playing the Yankees, therefore I was elated when the Diamondbacks won. And, BTW, I always love it when it's suspensful and the outcome isn't known until the end. That way the shnooks in New York have to try to stay awake until close to midnight to know the outcome. Being in the Pacific time zone makes evening sporting events end at a reasonable hour. chuck Opinions expressed are not necessarily those of my employer.

I completely agree with you concerning the DH. Plain and simply, the DH is not baseball. For those who say that the DH gets more hists than a pitcher, I would say the arguement is not valid. Since the pitcher always comes up ninth, compare NL pitcher's batting averages with the ninth man in the order in the AL. You will see most of the difference evaporate. You can also see most of the double switch, bunting, hitting behind the runner, and the squeeze play also fading from the AL scene. Dave

Chuck, it does make me feel better that the DH rule is "experimental". Sort of. At least it would, if I hadn't heard somewhere that the NL was considering adopting it. I used to live the Mountain time zone, where most games started and ended at reasonable times. Except one I stayed up for once that went 17 innings if I recall correctly. Us Eastern-time schnooks would have to skip sleeping altogether for that kind of game.

There is at least one advantage to being an "Eastern Time Zone Schnook" and that is that shows like Saturday Night Live are ... well ... live. Actually shows like that are live in the Central Time Zone as well.

I agree. The only place there should be a DH is in the all-star game. Pitchers aren't there because they can hit, they're there because they can pitch. Use a DH to give someone who's there for their hitting ability the chance. -- -Jeff New email address: jlcrosby@dilgardfoods.com The opinions expressed are my own and not necessarily the opinion of my company. [ If you can make a case for hitting for the pitcher why can't someone hit for a slick-fielding, no-hit third baseperson or any fielder; why not 'platoon ball'. dh is stooopid; and whatever it is it ain't baseball ] That last game was the first baseball game I've watched all the way through since 1987. bobh

I watched baseball last week for the first time in at least five years. I was struck once again by the difference between National and American league rules, regarding the pitcher batting. I find it thrilling when the pitchers face each other - without that, the concept of pitcher vs pitcher seems meaningless. The American league games lose a lot of drama (both the face-to-face thing, and the added factor in the leave-the-pitcher-in calculation). And how sweet it was in game 6 when Johnson got on base twice and got two runs (albeit as part of a runaway game). (I found myself rooting for the Diamondbacks during the course of the first game. Although I prefer to watch baseball when I don't care about the outcome, it seems impossible for me not to become partisan, usually for the apparent underdog.) Yay baseball.

PMFJI but there's a close parallel with a real bat and ball game, as opposed to your version of rounders. In cricket we have bowlers rather than pitchers. The ball must be bowled with a straight arm - a throwing action is not allowed. However, the bowler is not stuck on a mound but is allowed to run in. Also the ball may be delivered at variable heights and is allowed to strike the ground before reaching the batsman. This gives tremendous variation in the bowling: from slow spin through medium pace swing to fast. A top fast bowler and a major league pitcher are comparable in terms of absolute speed. Each style of bowling is highly specialised so a team has to carefully mix in a combination of batsmen and bowlers as every player has to take a turn with the bat. Those who are proficient at both arts are highly valued but rare. However, the most coveted player is the truly fast bowler. The great West Indian Michael Holding was nick-named "Silent Death" by the England players for his elegant gliding run combined with his terrifying unplayable deliveries zipping off the ground to anything between ankle and head height. The fascinating thing is that quite often the team's secret weapon in the bowling department is also their Achilles' Heel in the batting. Invariably the last man in, his job is often simply to survive while his partner endeavours to make the winning runs. While it's wonderful to watch a gifted batting specialist ply his trade, the idea of watching just batsmen bat is like eating cake without ginger. At any rate it's not cricket. Dave...
