  • Interfacing - Unix and AS/400

me again... I have been given a juicy assignment but a big one. I am to draw up interfacing standards regarding our existing Unix system and new i-series (AS/400). Documentation methods, ideas on standards, links to resources...all ideas are welcome. This is a great opportunity for me to make sure that things don't get mucked up in the long run but I want to make sure we entertain all ideas. Thanks in advance.

      Interfacing - Unix and AS/400

      1. AS/400 Client Access QNA UNIX Page - http://www.as400.ibm.com/clientaccess/qnaunix.htm 2. In the AS/400 Integrated File System (AS/400 IFS), you can store data in a UNIX-like file system that is compatible with Unix-based open system standards, such as POSIX and XPG (it even includes case-sensitive names). The name of this OS/400-based Unix-like file system is QOpenSys. To learn more about QOpenSys and how to use it, check out the OS/400 Integrated File System Introduction Manual for OS/400 V4R3 (SC41-5711-02) at the AS/400 Online Library ( http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/h...ne/v4r3eng.htm ). For OS/400 V4R4 and V4R5, this manual has migrated to the AS/400 Information Center, so you'll need to go to the OS/400 V4R3 version to read this one. 3. OS/400 also supports Transport Independent RPC (TI-RPC) and you can find more info on TI-RPC in the AS/400 IFS Manual listed in point 2. Interfacing - Unix and AS/400

Thanks Joe! What a big help! Is AS/400 PASE a feature that we buy or does that functionality exist on our V4R5? If we must purchase, can you give me a ballpark figure on the cost?

Hi Deb, This is what IBM wrote in that second article about PASE. If you're interested, I'd recommend you contact your sales rep for pricing or--perhaps--one of our fellow forum participants might be able to give us some more info. AS/400 PASE is available as OS/400 Option 33, a separately priced feature under OS/400 V4R4. AS/400 PASE applications are created on AIX and executed on AS/400 e-series hardware systems built as of September 1997. AS/400 PASE provides a subset of AIX functionality through more than 900 APIs, and future OS/400 releases should continue to add more.
