Lotus Extends Support of Notes/Domino 4.6

Regarding IBM's extension of Domino R4.6 to 2003, here's the details as we reported them in the Midrange Network Expert Alert email newsletter on March 22, 2001. Hope this helps. Joe Hertvik, Editor MNE Alert ( http://www.midrangecomputing.com/mne/subscribe for a **free** email subscription) ***************** 4. Lotus alerts the media: Notes and Domino R4.6 will be supported through January 2003 (kind of) **PLUS** target dates for next Domino QMR releases and why they are important to networking Domino by Joe Hertvik In a media advisory dated March 15, 2001, Lotus confirmed its intention to continue supporting its Notes, Domino, and Domino Designer R4.6 products through January 2003. However, there are two different layers of support removal that will affect R4.6 shops leading up to 2003. Here's Lotus' plan for removing R4.6 support: * Engineering support for R4.6 will continue through January 2002. This means you won't be able to get any new code fixes for R4.6 after this year. * Phone support for R4.6 will continue through January 2003. However, the phone support date may be up in the air somewhat, as Lotus also is stating that it will ".evaluate the need to continue support based on customer input in January, 2003." So the phone date looks like it could be a little soft, depending on how fast customers move up to Lotus R5 (which is Lotus' fondest wish). The other interesting point about this alert is that Lotus is further stating that-according to customer feedback-much of the Lotus installed base will have moved to R5 by 2002. Now, whether this is wishful thinking on Lotus' part or the true plans of its customers, it's apparent that Lotus is making plans for the future where R5 and its successor products take center stage and it no longer has to support R4.6 installations. Joe's recommendation: Time's running out on R4.6 so start thinking about your next move, particularly if you're going to soon be entering a planning period for fiscal year 2002. You may want to allocate resources to an R5.0 upgrade, if that's the way you'll want to go. ***end***
