This wasn't a problem in the good old days when I had OS/2 and EPM but now I have Windows NT and (ug) notepad. I've looked at several good editors already but I was wondering if there was something out there that maybe somewhat more useful in an AS/400 environment. Any suggestions?

Looking for a decent PC based file editor
Kenneth, I've looked at several good editors already There are only a few AS/400-aware PC based editors out there. By far the most common are these three:- [*]IBM's CODE/400 CODE400 [*]Aldon's Flex/Edit[*]Cozzi's Code Studio[/list]IBM just slashed the price on CODE/400 by 75% effective June 12, from $1150 per seat to $300. It is bundled with a GUI design tool, a debugger, and a copy of VisualAge for JAVA. The editor was ported from OS/2 and some people complain it does not look like a MS Windoze app, but since you are a former OS/2 user you may feel right at home. This is the tool IBM wants people to use instead of SEU, and IBM is very committed to the product. Aldon's product is based on Starbase's (aka Premia's) CodeWright editor, but with extension DLL's provided for AS/400 languages and connectivity. In terms of editor capabilities, the CodeWright engine is my personal favorite. Bob Cozzi's editor, Code Studio, is currently still in beta but scheduled for release in July last I heard. It is not extensible like the other two, not does it have all the features found in CODE/400 or Flex/Edit. OTOH, it is the cheapest of the three. All three have free trials available. There are others, such as Quick Code at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/medialink/ but they are not major players in the market. Doug

We use Flex/Edit here, and when I evaluated the options a few years ago, I thought it was easier to use than CODE/400. However, I just talked to my account representative at Aldon yesterday and they said that Flex/Edit was basically a dead product as a result of IBM's announcement. In other words they aren't planning any enhancements to the product. Maybe they will change there mind, but that is the situation right now. Dean Eshleman MMA, Inc.

I think I've settled on a product called TextPad. It doesn't have much in terms of scripting but it seems to be flexible enough for most of the oddball things I have to do. Plus, it's very cheap! Thanks for all of the excellent feedback!

Looking for a decent PC based file editor
Take a look at Programmers File Editor. It's FREE and works with virtually unlimited file sizes. Premia's CodeWright is also a nice editor as well. Very fast and very functional. If you can't find Programmers File Editor on the Internet, send me an email and I will provide a link to it. Regards, Richard Schoen RJS Software Systems Inc.
