Brocade, today announced new products and solutions that continue to fulfill the company's commitment of providing investment protection and extension for customers with existing McDATA storage networks. These solutions will deliver new capabilities to the installed customer base of both Brocade and McDATA SAN solutions, while maintaining interoperability and compatibility with existing equipment.

The announcements include:

  • The new Brocade 5000 Switch, which combines up to 32 ports of industry-leading 4 Gbit/sec performance with high availability and Ports on Demand capabilities to support mission-critical SANs that are based on either Brocade or traditional McDATA technology.
  • An enhanced version of Brocade SAN Health Professional that supports SAN fabrics containing McDATA products. SAN Health is the industry's most widely used SAN management application, and the latest release of the popular tool includes new change management capabilities along with support for traditional McDATA products.

These announcements closely follow the February 8, 2007 announcement of Brocade Access Gateway, a capability that allows Brocade SAN switch modules for bladed servers to interoperate seamlessly with Brocade, McDATA, and other SAN products that support the N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) standard.

"One of the most important elements of Brocade's commitment to its new McDATA customers was to deliver solutions that protect and extend their existing investments," said Steve Duplessie, Founder of the Enterprise Strategy Group. "This announcement, within weeks of the closing, demonstrates a strong understanding of the customer's desires and gives the McDATA installed base a great proof point that Brocade was serious in its intent. McDATA customers have got to be happy with this."

The Brocade 5000 Switch -- Enabling Advanced Interoperability
The new Brocade 5000 Switch is the first SAN switch in the industry to provide native interoperability to either Brocade or McDATA SANs, without compromising performance or functionality. The Brocade 5000 offers enterprise-class capabilities and performance, and is suitable for departmental SANs or core-edge enterprise SANs. The high-performance 4 Gbit/sec switch is packaged in a compact one-rack-unit form factor with Ports on Demand capabilities to enable scaling from 16 to 24 or 32 ports.

The Brocade 5000 extends Brocade's commitment to delivering energy-efficient solutions, consuming up to 76 percent less power than competing products on the market today. As a result, it is an ideal solution for reducing power and cooling requirements, as well as ongoing operational costs.

The Brocade 5000 will be available from select OEM and channel partners beginning the first week of March 2007.

"We're very pleased to have the Brocade 5000 SAN switch, as part of the IBM TotalStorage portfolio of SAN solutions," said Bob Mahoney, Business Line Executive, Storage Networking & NSeries IBM Systems & Technology Group. "IBM and Brocade are both focused on providing IT professionals with cost-effective and highly reliable storage infrastructure systems to efficiently manage data throughout its lifecycle."

"As the newest member of the EMC Connectrix family, the 5000 Switch underscores Brocade's and EMC's commitment to provide our mutual customers versatile, function-rich solutions for their information infrastructures," said Barbara Robidoux, EMC Vice President, Storage Product Marketing. "The interoperability between Brocade and McDATA technology will further enhance our ability to deliver a comprehensive set of switch and director products to businesses of all sizes. The scalability, performance, and interoperability of the new 5000 Switch will further help customers deploy SANs to more effectively store, protect, optimize, and leverage their information throughout its lifecycle."

"By connecting both Brocade and McDATA fabrics, we see the Brocade 5000 as an important part of investment protection for customers," said Praveen Asthana, director of storage marketing in Dell's product group. "Interoperability and expansion capabilities are critical issues. This product offers both."

"The new Brocade 5000 Switch delivers the interoperability and performance customers are demanding," said Steve TenBarge, Vice President, Product Marketing, Hitachi Data Systems. "The advanced capabilities of Hitachi's storage systems coupled with the new Brocade switch provides customers with industry-leading enterprise-class capabilities as well as the ability to maximize their existing infrastructure assets."
