Since IBM i 7.1, IBM has released a new Technology Refresh each spring and fall. The TRs coincided with both a cumulative PTF package and the announcement outlining it as such. Furthermore, they coincided with the spring and fall conferences as it would make good sense for IBM to be out communicating with many customers at events.
Although adopting open-source technology usually involves developers learning a new language, several IBM i experts in open source point out that adding it to an enterprise’s solutions toolkit is more of a business-cultural change.

While the concept of open-source technology on the IBM i has been around for years now, as with many “new waves” in technology over the platform’s history, a large number of enterprises have been relatively slow to adopt it. According to HelpSystems’ 2019 IBM i Marketplace Survey Results report, a top concern at 50 percent of the participating survey sites was “application modernization,” and 71 percent of respondents report running more than half their core business apps on the i. Open source is a path to the modernization goal, but from the outside, the issues surrounding its adoption can appear daunting, even though many companies already use it in some form.

A couple weeks ago, I upgraded an old Model 520 to a POWER9 S914 in Ontario, Canada. It was a great coup for a couple of reasons, the first being that these folks were off IBM hardware and software maintenance for about 10 years or so. They were having physical problems with the old machine, and it was really on its last legs. Secondly, considering we brought them from IBM i 5.4 all the way up to version 7.2, we had to navigate past a few object observability issues. We had to work with a couple of software vendors to get updated objects, which worked out marvelously.
IBM bought Lotus Corporation in 1995, but the synergy many hoped for hasn't done as much as it could have for IBM Notes/Domino. With finalization of IBM's sale of Notes/Domino to HCL Software June 30 and release of Domino V10.01, this venerable workflow app suite is starting to bloom anew.

At the end of June, IBM completed purchase of the suite by HCL Software, a division of India-based HCL Technologies (formerly Hindustan Computing, Ltd.). (The company also has a major office in Chelmsford, Mass.) Given the reported sale price of $1.8 billion, HCL has a big stake in making Domino more successful than IBM did.
