We're running this story not because we believe we have a large audience of military IT readers (although, why not?) but because we started longing for a better laptop the last time ours fell off the baggage x-ray conveyor belt at the airport. If you want to get your CEO a laptop that will take a licking and keep on ticking, then read on!-- Editor.

GETAC Inc., a leading innovator and manufacturer of rugged computers that meet the demands of field-based applications, will demonstrate the Ultra-Rugged GETAC A790, the high-performance GETAC M230, and a pair of newcomers-the "bright-as-you-need-it" GETAC B300 notebook PC and ultra-lightweight GETAC E100 tablet PC-during the Joint Warfighting Conference 2008, co-sponsored by AFCEA International and the U.S. Naval Institute, wrapping up today at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, Booth #319.

"The GETAC A790 and M230 are well-known among military users for their fully rugged reliability and state-of-the-art features," said Jim Rimay, vice president of sales and marketing at GETAC USA. "However, users also are impressed by the new GETAC B300 notebook and E100 tablet, the lightest and brightest new fully rugged PCs on the market today. These new models are specially designed for people on the move whose work or work environments demand a high-performance computing solution that can survive and thrive under the most extreme conditions. We believe they fill some significant performance gaps in the military PC market, where a lighter, brighter rugged solution is highly valued."

Here's a rundown of the GETAC lineup available for demonstration at the Joint Warfighting Conference:

GETAC A790--The Ultra-Rugged A790 is the "Swiss army knife" of rugged notebook PCs, able to survive and thrive in the harshest environments while providing extreme versatility, expandability and security features. The A790 is MIL-STD-810F and IP54 compliant and satisfies critical EMI requirements. Reliable and efficient operation is provided by a 12.1-inch or 14.1-inch TFT LCD with sunlight-readable option, shock-mounted hard drive, water-resistant and dustproof keyboard with optional LED back-lit rubber keyboard, and a wide array of expansion opportunities through multiple bays. The A790 also includes a TPM 1.2 chip, a fingerprint biometric device, and a smart card reader to ensure data security. Inside, it features an Intel Core Duo L2400 1.66 GHz processor, 2MB L2 cache, and 512MB DDR2 (expandable to 2GB), an 80GB SATA HDD with optional upgrade to 120/160GB and -20 degrees operation.

GETAC M230--The GETAC M230 fully rugged notebook computer combines high performance and a full complement of state-of-the-art built-ins and options in a rugged, ultra-portable slim design that meets MIL-STD-810F and IP54 standards for durability under extreme conditions. The M230 includes several features not available anywhere else--a larger 14-inch XGA or 15-inch SXGA TFT LCD high resolution display, an optional ATI M54 chip for additional graphics processing power, more storage (up to 120GB) and the ability to accommodate a wide range of plug-ins. Inside, it offers an Intel Core Duo L2400 1.66 GHz processor, 2MB L2 cache, and 512MB DDR2 (expandable to 4GB). Outside, options include a sunlight readable display, touch-screen, water-resistant membrane keyboard, TPM 1.2 and Kensington lock security features, smart card reader and other upgrades. The M230 accommodates a variety of wireless options and an optional GPS receiver.

GETAC B300. GETAC's new dynamic warrior takes daylight-readable technology to the next step with the industry's first 1200 Nit screen with optional night vision capabilities for use in any lighting conditions, day or night, without sacrificing battery life. It achieves this feat by utilizing new patent-pending micro-controller technology, which employs an advanced software and hardware combination to auto-adjust for brightness and allow instant override with a dedicated brightness hot key. The 7.7-pound B300 features a 13.3-inch TFT XGA transmissive Ultra-Bright, sunlight-readable display with optional integrated touchscreen and 1200 Nit LCD panel. It is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo Merom L7500, 4MB L2 cache processor that operates at 1.6GHz and offers up to 12 hours of battery life on one battery. The B300 includes 512MB DDRII DRAM upgradeable to 4GB, 80/120GB shock-resistant HDD, and sealed ports and connector cover. The fully rugged unit is contained in a water-resistant magnesium alloy case that is vibration and drop-shock resistant. It is designed and tested to MIL-STD-810F and IP54 standards and is available with optional salt fog and/or MIL-STD-461E compliance. The B300 includes 802.11b/g wireless LAN connectivity; Bluetooth 2.0, EV-DO and GPRS/EDGE networks, CMDA/GPRS and integrated GPS are available as options. Security features-including fingerprint scanner, optional smart card reader, cable lock slot and TPM v1.2-also are available.

GETAC E100. Weighing in at only 3 pounds-making it the lightest rugged tablet PC on the market, according to the company,-the versatile, easy-to-maneuver E100 is designed with field mobility applications in mind. That said, the E100 is every bit as tough as the heavyweights, meeting MIL-STD-810F and IP54 standards for durability and protection against dirt, dust, water, motion, vibration, temperature and other factors. The E100 offers an 8.4-inch TFT SVGA transmissive display with integrated touch screen panel or an optional ultra-bright sunlight-readable display and 800 Nit backlit LCD screen that delivers astonishing readability that is comparable to larger-screen models. GETAC also offers an array of expandable "mission boxes" designed for customized market applications that add RFID, barcode and magnetic strip readers or digital cameras to the E100.

The E100 is powered by an Intel Stealey 512KB L2 cache processor that operates at 800MHz and offers up to five hours of battery life. The E100 includes 512MB DDRII DRAM upgradeable to 1GB and a 60/80/100GB shock-resistant HDD, all contained in a water-resistant Fully Rugged magnesium alloy case that is vibration and drop-shock resistant. It includes 802.11b/g wireless LAN and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity as standard features; EV-DO and GPRS/EDGE networks, CMDA /GPRS and integrated GPS are available as options. A smart card reader, Kensington lock and TPM v1.2 are standard.

GETAC P470.  This lightweight semi-rugged model is designed specifically for professional users seeking a high-performance, affordable mobile platform that offers maximum security and connectivity as well as protection against the daily rigors of mobile computing. The P470 features a 14.1-inch widescreen XGA LCD display with optional sunlight readable or touch-screen display and backlight keyboard, a shock-mounted 80 GB removable hard drive (expandable to 160 GB) and sealed ports and connectors within a magnesium alloy case that is vibration and drop-shock resistant. Inside it features an Intel Core Duo T2400 1.83 Ghz processor with 2 MB L2 cache and 512 MB expandable DRAM for fast, reliable performance. Those who want additional processing power can upgrade to the optional Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2.0 GHz processor. Standard security features include the TPM 1.2 Trust Platform Module, Kensington lock, fingerprint scanner access control and smart card reader for worry-free secure transactions. Also available are a full range of wireless options, including WWAN, WLAN and Bluetooth. Users additionally can avoid devoting shared system memory to power onboard video by upgrading to a dedicated ATI-M64 video controller with 256 MB VRAM.

v100.jpgGETAC V100--This recently introduced fully rugged convertible PC features an LCD screen that instantly transforms from a notebook into a tablet PC and is fully compliant with MIL-STD-810F and IP54 standards. The highly portable 4.9-pound V100 features ultra-quiet fanless design and includes a wide range of standard features, including a 10.4- inch screen, power-saving 1.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 Platform Technology, 1 GB expandable to 2 GB of DRAM, 120 GB shock-mounted removable hard drive, Integrated Bluetooth, reversible water-resistant camera, and a full menu of wireless networking capabilities-all housed in a water resistant rugged magnesium alloy case.
