CodeGear, a subdivision of Borland Corp. and a leader in developer tools, has announced it is offering a Delphi/400 family of products for System i applications development. The move extends to System i developers the latest features and proven visual, rapid application development (RAD) framework of CodeGear's Delphi for Windows and PHP products.

Using Delphi/400 and Delphi/400 for PHP, developers with IBM iSeries and AS/400 systems can rapidly create easy-to-use rich Windows and Web 2.0-based clients for legacy AS/400 and System i applications, the company says. In addition, development teams can build new applications and extend existing systems with modern Windows and Web development languages such as Delphi and PHP instead of RPG and COBOL.

The Delphi/400 and Delphi/400 for PHP products are now available directly from CodeGear as part of its industry-leading developer tools portfolio.

"The majority of AS/400 and System i applications in use today are still character-based, terminal oriented applications," said Michael Swindell, CodeGear vice president of Products and Strategy. "With the Delphi/400 products, developers can use RAD techniques to quickly and cost effectively add rich client front ends with Windows XP, Vista, or PHP Web 2.0 user interfaces. Modernized front ends are easier to learn and operate, which translates to increased efficiency and quality of service and lower operational cost," said Swindell.

"We were able to take old applications and replace them with a simple Windows user interface very quickly," said Jörg Ahlrep, senior project manager of Techgroup Schweiz AG. "There was almost no learning curve for our end users, the applications were very easy for them to use. And we were able to run everything on existing hardware. We chose Delphi/400 because of its direct, fast, and native access to System i. The perfect combination of System i power, all the user interface features the Windows world offers, and rapid development."

The Delphi/400 and Delphi/400 for PHP products, created in partnership with SystemObjects France, combine SystemObjects' AS/400 middleware technology and CodeGear's Delphi for Windows and PHP technologies.  Delphi 2007 for Win32 speeds Microsoft Windows development by combining Delphi's visual RAD approach with support for Windows Vista, AJAX, and streamlined database connectivity. Delphi for PHP accelerates visual development of PHP Web applications.

In addition, the Delphi/400 products provide full access to System i databases, services, and programs via Delphi's RAD tools and visual components. Developers can develop System i database applications using Delphi and PHP standard components in the same way they can for Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and other databases.
