IBM Websphere Extends Performance Leadership

IBM's record-setting benchmark results and new migration tools attract customers from competing platforms.

IBM has reinforced its leadership in the JAVA community by announcing an industry first benchmark result and a new migration toolkit that dramatically simplifies the transition from Oracle WebLogic to IBM WebSphere. The announcements illustrate IBM's commitment to delivering the most effective performance for an organization’s full range of critical business applications while helping to increase customer satisfaction and reduce costs, according to the company.

IBM is the first vendor in the industry to publish performance results based on SPECJEnterprise2010, the latest benchmark for businesses developing modern applications that utilize Java EE 5.0 for streamlined development to dramatically reduce costs, improve performance and speed time-to-value.1

By publishing these results immediately after the release of SPECJEnterprise2010 and ahead of all other application server vendors, IBM has:

  • Positioned IBM clients to take advantage of the significant benefits provided by Java EE 5 and meet the requirements of the most modern applications.
  • Shown unmatched performance for its client’s largest and most critical applications that require the highest levels of availability and scalability by delivering 7,903.16 Enterprise Java Operations per second (EjOPS) on a cluster of eight server nodes. 2
  • Proven that for applications optimized for cost and simplicity of administration, IBM clients can experience unprecedented performance levels based on benchmark results of 1,013.40 EjOPS on a single server node.3
  • Demonstrated that IBM clients can achieve the highest levels of performance through an integrated, IBM solution consisting of IBM WebSphere Application Server, DB2 and IBM servers (BladeCenter and System x) hosted on Linux.

One of these clients, Vlaamse vervoermaatschappij De Lijn, a public transportation company in Belgium that runs more than 2,200 buses and 350 trams serving a population of 6.5 million people, is already seeing the benefits of WebSphere Application Server V7 speed and performance.

"In our large-scale distributed environment, reliable performance and scalability of our application server are critical,” said Bert van Hemelen, ICT Infrastructure Manager De Lijn. “We've enjoyed significant performance increases with each WebSphere Application Server release and this latest version is no different. And with the advanced clustering, data replication services, and unique workload distribution, harnessing and managing that performance is easy."

Responding to requests from clients faced with the daunting and time consuming task of migrating their existing applications, IBM is also announcing the availability of its new WebSphere Application Server Migration Toolkit that helps organizations migrate from Oracle WebLogic Server* to WebSphere Application Server v7. Time and labor, combined with concerns about not interrupting business functions, are major reasons why organizations postpone migrations.

The new toolkit has been shown to cut the time required for a typical migration, which often takes three to six months, in half. IBM is able to do this by utilizing technology developed in IBM labs, which automates many of the standard migration tasks that formerly had to be done manually yet still provides the client with ultimate control over decision making–something other migration tools fail to do, the company says.

IBM is sharing this new toolkit with its business partners such as Prolifics, who are utilizing it to help with a growing number of migrations from Oracle.

“The new WebSphere Application Server Migration Toolkit delivers migration tools and resources that help reduce the time and costs associated with the migration,” said Mike Chadwick, CEO of Prolifics. “Since the Oracle purchase of BEA, we are seeing large numbers of former BEA customers who have chosen to migrate from WebLogic to WebSphere. These customers cite the uncertainty over the life expectancy and support of their existing systems and they are seeking to lower their total cost of ownership and to avoid the uncertainty that still surrounds the acquisition.”
